vista sp1 unslipstream?

Have you considered installing SP2 now that you have the first service pack on? For simply seeing SP1 uninstalled you go into the Control Panel>Programs and Features and click on the show all updates option there. That will then display all MS updates including SP1.

Once you have SP1 removed you can download the free version of Macrium's Reflect if you have a second hard drive available to store an image of the present Vista installation without SP1 installed once you have removed the service pack.

Are you experiencing any particular problems with SP1 on?

Sounds more like you have been seeing a few bad installs of Vista from the disk you are using. An incomplete installation will typically run into a variety of problems and why using the original disk or a good iso image for a usb flash drive install tends to see the best results over anything slipstreamed.

You may want to consider upgrading out of Vista into the 64bit 7. Did Vista come preinstalled or did you replace the original installation with the present Vista install?

That still seems a bit odd that you are not able to download anything. The reason I say that is after just having set up another dual boot of Vista with the present 7 host I added a temp install of Vista on a VHD(Virtual Hard Drive) and was able to download(and wait) for some 203 updates while the VHD isn't able to be activated since the key is already in use for the secondary OS install.

Have you considered installing SP2 available from Softpedia to see if that would help? Vista SP2 - download tag - page 1 - Softpedia

That's the redistributable form of the second SP for Vista available for download there. But one thing that might prevent the MS updates would be having the site blocked by a firewall if you have a 3rd party program on and for some reason have MS blocked rather then seen as an exception.

How are you checking for updates? Are you set for automatic updates in the Control Panel or manually checking for them yourself by either clicking the check for updates button there or going direct to the update site?

In other words what happens when you arrive at Microsoft Update by going online first and then to the update site seen there?

Without any protections on including turning off the Windows firewall something is preventing you likely a system setting unless the disk used for installation is simply no good to start with and simply leaving out a few important files needed. That would simply continue to see bad installs no matter how many times you perform a clean install of Vista if the disk is best put a bad one to start with!

If you not able to borrow one for the same edition and use your key after installing from a genuine disk you are simply stuck considering buying a new one that can install properly. I've seen bad installs of Windows going back to 9X and was still able to download updates.

To this day even when both of Vista's SPs were still in beta form they never ran into the problems you are seeing suggesting that the solution you have open is for getting a new disk to start over with. The only other problem besides a repeat bad install would be not passing the WGA! That allows the update installer namely Windows Installer 3.1 to be downloaded and installer prior to seeing any updates available.
