I have recently wiped my hard drive because it had a virus. So i was putting on vista that came with my laptop and i think it shut down, now it wont do any thing but restart and show the same error message. The message says:"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. windows installation cannot proceed. to instal windows, click OK to restart the computer, and restart the installation". I have things i need my laptop for that are school related and need to get it running. Can anyone help?

Hi,

If you didn't back up your files prior to wiping the hard disk then you are on sticky ground. The more times you write to the disk (try to install windows) the more likely it is that the files will be over written.

So you will need another PC & suitable software to access the hard disk & recover any files that are available.

Do you have access to that facility?
How important are these files?
Are they so important that you would you spend money to recover them?

If so, then you could use: -

Freeware file recovery software to undelete files, recover or restore lost files

Hope this is of use to you?

let us know how you get on.

Hi,

If thats all?

As Patonb asked, have you tried to repeat the process of installing Vista?

Thanks for the nudge!

Patonb,

I have used this before & did all I asked of it.

The only issue I have is the licencing of it. The licence expires each year & needs renewing, hence it is expensive to keep current.

If I had to recommend a recovery tool to try, this is the one!

I must say that you need to have it installed on a working system & use the "defective drive" as a slave unit.

So, do you have any thoughts on the software I have mentioned?

and thank you for the challenge on this.

Hi Ninjatuna,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

We need your help to best help you by answering some important questions.

What are you using to re-install Vista? Is it a genuine Vista Installation, a Recovery Disk from the manufacturer, a Recovery Partition on the computer, or a Recovery Disk you made from the Recovery Partition?

How EXACTLY are you doing the re-installation - give it to me step-by-step? It sounds to me like you are not first formatting the drive or perhaps there is some sort of hardware problem or a problem with the installation media. During the process, you will probably be asked if you want to do a full format or a quick format - choose full format. But before that, read the following:

You can use Knoppix http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html with a good ISO copier like: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm along with a blank CD. This should give you enough access to the system (if you can't get in any other way) to backup your important data. If that doesn’t work, try slaving the drive to another computer and recovering the data using that other computer to access the disk. Once done, you can do a clean install either using the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk or the Recovery Disk or the Recovery Partition (whatever process is dictated by your computer manufacturer – you may need to contact them for the procedure and perhaps to get recovery disks). To do a clean install proceed as follows: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_install_03.asp (adapted as necessary by the procedures of your computer manufacturer). Then you will need to re-install all your programs, reset all your preferences, reconfigure your network and email settings, restore your backed up data, run Windows Update with possibly nearly 150 updates pending,...

If that still does not work, try HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link).

To test your hard drive, check the manufacturer and then get the diagnostic utility from: http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/hard-drive-support/302602-hard-drive-diagnostic-utilities.html (and/or get one from your hard drive or computer manufacturer if they have one available – it wouldn’t hurt to try both). If it fails the test, replace it. If it passes the test, then there's probably nothing wrong with it.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hi,

OK, lets start at the begining.

Have you selected a complete wipe again & started from scratch or are you trying to continue with the failed recovery?

I understand your frustration. We've all been there ourselves. Please re-read my prior post that asks a number of questions - none of which was whether you tried to reinstall it, but rather what you are using to do so and exactly HOW you are doing it (among other things). We need to understand the situation and what is happening to be able to help you properly. It may need you to type a long reply to answer fully, but doing so will help us to assist you - so please answer those questions to the best of your ability and in as much detail as possible. Once we understand more, we can probably offer some recommendations to diagnose the problem and/or resolve it. But we can't do it without you.

Thank you for the effort to provide us with the information we need.

Good luck!
