Startup Repair failure

Hello, I am new to the forum under rather bad circumstances

My laptop has stopped booting up properly as of today. It's running Windows Vista, it keeps running Start-up Repair continuously. I cant get into safe mode, or access the boot log. I have yet to try a system restore to a previous date as it is on limited access.Normally I wouldn't really wouldn't be as stressed about it, but my external HD +$*$+$% on me recently so I don't have anything backed up with the second semester in full swing . But anyways here is the Start-up Repair

So I downloaded Ubuntu and tried running it on my laptop, but ran into this message during the process.

(initramfs)mount:mounting/dev/loop0 on//filesystem.squashf's failed: input/output error
Can not mount/dev/loop0(/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashf's)on//filesystem.squashf's

Don't know what I 'm doing wrong, I just need to access some files and documents for back up. Then I can scrap this HD. Anyone have any other ideas?

If you used Ubuntu correctly, Im at a loss as to the cause of your problem.

Lets try to work together on this. Start over, follow the instuctions that I gave you. When you have the problem tell me what you did and maybe I can help.
I have never done it myself, but I must have helped at least a half a dozen members using Ubuntu in the way it is explained in my article.

The problem with ubuntu is that it's not finding your hard disk (/dev/sda) at all. If you even banged in a usb key, it might go. Basically it looking for a directory location to hang the root of the system on. Strange. Have you the hard disk out? BTW, there's plenty of live cds besides ubuntu.

You could try damn small linux - about 50 megs total, less pressure on memory.

Thanks for the help guys, I burn the cd again with nero not imgburn and it worked. Now I'm back up my HD. Hopefully my internal HD is not done for, or I'll have get a new one and have no idea how to go about installing that .
