Hi guys.

Sorry if this has been talked about before I did a search and found nothing.

When I insert any of my USB flash drives a message shows.

Do you want to scan and fix your Kingston (E)?

There might be a problem with some files on this device or disc.
This can happens if you remove the device or disc before the files have been written to it.

Scan fix (recommended)
This will prevent future problems when copying files to this device or disc.

Continue without scanning.

Now I have scanned in the past which does a restart and scans the drive but no problems are found. I just click continue without scanning and there is no problem adding or removing files.

Now this annoying feature is exactly the same on Windows 7.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that seeing this.
Does anyone know of any way to disable this?

Have you tried disabling AutoPlay?

Give this a try-

Go to Start and run msconfig.exe.
Under Services, uncheck Shell Hardware Detection
Restart Windows

You could also try-

ckhdsk usb: /f

Why would I want to turn off the Autorun feature there is no autorun.inf on any flash drive?

It would also be a pain to search CD's\DVD's to autorun them.

Its just another stupid feature of Vista and Win7.

The tutorial I referenced was for disabling Autoplay.

I thought this message was executed by Autoplay, but it turns out that it's executed by a service (Shell Hardware Detection service) that uses Autoplay. If you take a look here:

Disable Do You Want To Scan And Fix Removable Disk, AutoPlay

You will see that the only way to disable this prompt will cause other features to stop working:

Before you go ahead you should know that this will disable autoplay on the Windows system. Autoplay displays various options in a prompt whenever a device is connected to the computer. If you load a video DVD for instance Windows will display a prompt with options to play the video directly.

There is another feature that gets axed when the Shell Hardware Detection service is stopped: The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service depends on the Shell Hardware Detection service. If the latter is stopped, the former will stop working as well. The Windows Image Acquisition provides image acquisition services for scanners and cameras.

If you still want to go through with it, then wither has already outlined the instructions. In addition to the above advice, try this:

Try this: go to Start, type "cmd" without the quotes, and then right-click on the shortcut in the Start Menu and choose "Run as administrator". Once in the Admin Command Prompt, type "chkntfs /d" without the quotes.

Note that if your Vista is up-to-date, autorun is no longer functional except for optical drives. That happened via a microsoft update.

I remove the service (Shell Hardware Detection service) but that wouldn't autorun anything so I enabled it again.

I'm running all the latest updates which are updated daily.

Did you get the same error messages with the shell hardware detection disabled? It's not going to enable any autorun features.

Did you try the checkdisc commands that I and Tom982 suggested?

No you get no error message with shell hardware detection disabled you just have to find the drive on Computer which is just as bad.

No In haven't tried Tom982 suggestion as I don't need to do a chkntfs /e on any USB drive unless I have a problem with the drive.

If you plug one of your flash drives in and then open it's recycle bin, do you get any errors?

I don't have a recycle bin on any of my flash drives they are all generally 2GB drives.

Recycle bins are found on all partitions for a single hard drive and should be on any external drives. It could be hidden. On the other hand, if you haven't written anything to a drive and deleted anything, it would be empty. I'm out of ideas.
