New Install: Cannot Hear Anything (PLEASE HELP!!!)

OK, I recently had to reinstall Vista x64. I have an MSI board and installed the factory Realtek HD Audio software from the CD that came with it. I have a Altec Lansing speaker setup (one sub, two desktop speakers) that is functional but I cannot hear them in Vista.

I've tried to locate where this issue is and cannot. I've checked the Device Manager - nothing. When I play WMP I can see that the volume is registering an output but nothing is coming out of my speakers. Could the error be in the Realtek HD Audio Manager? When I click on the Windows sound icon (in the lower left corner), under the "Playback" tab I have 3 devices:

1 - Digital Display Audio (not plugged in)
Speakers (working) and checked as if in use
Realtek Digital Output (working)

That all seems legit, but when I play it - nothing.

Somebody please help me! I'm a serious music lover and cannot hear a single note.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum....

First question... How is it connected? usb or 8.5mm plug aka headphone style?

You have 2 outputs working so one of them is your speakers possibly, and the other is not connected.

Which has the green check mark beside it?

First, thanks so much for listening.

Plug is 8.5mm port.

In the Realtek HD Audio Manager, I see the 6 ports (2 out). None are checked green, but the port that the plug is in is illuminated (not subdued). It is a grey-colored port, just like the color of the plug.

A buddy of mine just said to uninstall/reinstall with OEM software (which I did already), yeah?

I'd try swapping the plug for the green one (front speaker). I'm thinking realtek is outputting as the wrong thing.

Sorry, replug the speakers into the computer. Use the green plug on the back which is the front speakers.

BUT WAIT!

Since I got you guys here, really quick:

I've got an Acer P215, suggested res at 1440x900. However, when I am at that, there is about .5" all around the screen that is unused (a window in a window type stuff). How do I stop that?

I can extend it to 1680x1050, but it seems to go right back.

I am running CCC for my Radeon graphics card. Conflict?

Have you tried actually going through the monitor setups? As in using the buttons on the front to make the image positioned right?

The manual has the info on how to do that on page 12 or 13

Hi Kampfzentrum,

In addition, the black border issue can also be fixed in the Catalyst Control Center following the below mentioned steps:
• Right-click desktop and click Catalyst Control Center.
• Open Catalyst Control Center.
• Click “Preferences” on the top right corner, and click “Advanced Mode”.
• Click “My Digital Flat-Panels” to expand it.
• Click “Scaling Options (Digital Flat-Panel)”.

Under it, move the slider towards “Overscan” until the black border disappears.

Please post back with the results.
