I thought you were using a mail client and not a webmail (gmail) system, because you stated about not changing the smtp settings, but still...
Still, at least you're replying to us what's happening, most people come to support boards and never come back after posting their question.

I don't use gmail (I use gmx.co.uk, like most spambots tend to) so I can't really be of much use here
