Command prompt problem

Vista Business + SP1

Very recently on opening Command Prompt ordinary or Administrator it flashes up briefly and then vanishes. THis happens whatever mode I use to open it. Start/Run/system32 etc.
I tried system restore but no joy. I can in fact get round this as I have put into System 32 the Cmd file from XP and this works as does the similar from W2000 but I would like to get my Vista one back.
I cant see anything except it flashes up for two seconds so its there . Is this a corrupt registry entry. I did run SFC but no joy.
Help please. Thanks

Sounds like it may be courrpt. Try a repair install of vista.
Have you had any other problems?
Have you looked in your error logs to see if there is any info in there?

Repair install not so easy as all I have is a Dell CD which only reinstalls. However have tried SFC and Startup Repair no problems. Tried error logs nothing useful on this. My feel is that I need to get at the system 32 file in Vista and reinstall it but dont see how to. Vista Business + SP1

Have you tried to find the file cmd.exe. If you can find it or which cabinet it is in you can copy it manually.

If the file cmd.exe is missing that might be a problem.

Your autoexec.nt file has become corrupt (probably some (anti)spyware or (anti)virus). Copy a clean version from the Windows CD or another computer

Try C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe

Well yes I think I said this. I tried the Cmd.exe file in system32 but that does exactly the same flashes up for 2 sec and then disappears. Still no further forward.

Well yes I think that you should clean install?

What this would mean is reinstalling all the stuff on my PC. No thanks there must be a better way. But thanks for the info anyhow.

Have you got the disk for your computer, i.e. vista or restore.
Can you find the cmd.exe file on these disk?
If you can then copy the file into your system directory and that should solve the problem.

Good suggestion but been there, cant seem to find it searched disk. Assumed it is consolidated somewhere. Do you know where it would be seems as if no System 32 on "rescue disk" but you are right thats the way to go.

Without looking at the disk myself I can not help you. There will be different folders to look through and different cabinet files to look through. You can always try a windows search of the files on the cd.
