Solved 0xc01a001d - crashing during SP1 install

I've encountered the same error discussed here whilst installing an update to Vista: http://www.coredatarecovery.com/upd...39894614-registrymachinecomponentsderiveddat/

I want to try and recover the system as described, but I don't really understand the steps. My questions are:

1. I don't have a blank CD - is it ok to use a flash instead? Then, how do you actually boot from the CD/flash?

2. I don't understand points 1 - 3. Can someone explain it more simply?

3. Should I back up my files when I am using Linux, or wait

4. This error seems to have been known for years, yet I only just downloaded the pack now - how come windows haven't fixed it? Aren't updates supposed to improve things?!

(I noticed it came up here this year but the suggested method doesn't work as system restore is screwed over and I really don't want to lose all my files http://www.vistax64.com/windows-upd...-message-sp1-installed-froze-no-movement.html )

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi & welcome

1. No, you will need a bootable CD version of the linux sytem.

2. Points 1 -3 are decribing explorer actions in Linux.

3. Your choice but if you are worried, back it up!

4. MS does not support pre SP1 systems now. If your computer is an OEM one contact them for an updated recovery disk.

Hello smartse and welcome to the forums

You can boot from a USB by following this tutorial:

Create a Bootable Ubuntu USB Flash Drive the Easy Way - How-To Geek

Use Ubuntu, not Knoppix - it's nicer

Then follow this tutorial to backup your files:

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek

Ignore the first few stages about making a CD and booting off it - you're doing it with a USB and its covered in the first tutorial

When you get down to this stage in that tutorial:

(please note the Windows folder shown in that image)
Then you can carry on from stage 4 on your tutorial:

Thanks for the replies, but I've decided the best thing to do is just to ditch windows and use ubuntu for good. If I took my car to have a service and they cut the engine in half I think I'd find another garage, so it seems sensible to do the same here! Thanks though!
