Hello i was wondering if anyone can help,
my friend has a laptop that he has had for about 5 years and these past few weeks it has been very sluggish. he gets 100%cpu usage all the time even when he has just logged on. He has given it to me to have a look at but i have no clue what to do?

i have ran malware and rootkit and virus scanners and found nothing and have looked at the task manager and have found that scv host.exe is on there multiple times and all the different prosesses are using a lot of his cpu.
what can i do about this?
these are his system specs
Acer aspire 5535
Windows Vista Basic
AMD Turion X2 dual core mobile technology
RM-70 (2.0GHZ 1MB L2 Cache)
1408 MB ATI radeon HD 3200 graphics hyper memory
4GB ddr2 ram

like i said his computer has been fine for 5 years and he hasnt installed anything in a long time so any help on this issue would be appriciated.

Welcome
Try hitting alt, cntrl and delete at the same time. Go to task manager. Give us a screen shot of process and memory. Click the top of the columns to bring the big users to the top. This will answer a lot

Try my solution, also, if it leads nowhere. Make a full anti virus scan and download and and make a full scan with malwarebytes.

My reason for wanting more info. is you say Windows Vista Basic,, I do see 4 gig of ram. so, that should not be an issue.

I can see that one instance of Chrome is currently using 42.69% of CPU time, which seems a bit high. In fact, adding that usage to the 10.17% that you have highlighted (again, Chrome) yields a total of 52.86% of CPU time just for Chrome on its own.

Can you click on the CPU heading so that it shows the items with the highest CPU usage at the top and then post another snip showing what else is taking up CPU time. We need to see where the other 47.14% is being used.

Something is definitely not right there. You have Process Explorer itself taking 14.23%, whereas on my system it hovers around the 1% mark. I've only seen it go as high as 5% maximum, and yours is 3x that.

In your st screen, Power point is running at 31%. What type of presentation was it?

The 2nd had Chrome running at 47% and 13%6, what were you doing?

You need to reboot, not pen any programs, then get a screen of task manager, filtered by % cpu usage, like Rich has suggested.

the power point presentation was just a blank screen and he does have 4gb ram but only 3b is usable due to a 32 bit system. it has sp2 installed and is fully up to date.
when i log on i get about 40% cpu but whenever i click anything from documents to internet to even right clicking it jumps back up to 100% It is almost unusable

How many chrome extensions are you running? I have chromium snap shot 18.0.998.0. Task Manager shows I'm running 9 copies of chrome.exe. But the CPU usage fluctuates between 1% and 3%. I suspect you have an Extension or a bad version of chrome that's hogging the CPU. Try a newer release. Disable all your extensions and check CPU usage as you enable each in turn. Something should show up. If not then it may be the chrome release itself.

http://build.chromium.org/f/chromium/snapshots/Win_Webkit_Latest/

Make backups of your chrome install and settings folder before using a snap shot. The main reason is if the snap shot is a major version newer, it will alter your Local settings so they won't run with the older version. Just copy the folders back if you back it off and it will work. Also it's a good idea to download the win32 zip file rather than the installer. Unzip to an empty folder instead of installing.

Unless you are playing video in all 3 simultaneously I don't understand the CPU usage of over 40%.

I would try one of the snap shots as I suggested.
