Hi,
I am sorry but I am ignorant about the computer system. I have a Toshiba I bout about a year ago that runs Vista. On the computer it says Vista PC Workgroup
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2Duo
My Internet connections have been glitchy lately. Our service is in a package deal (phone, cable, Internet) and usually is pretty good, but lately it was taking several tries to change websites. Someone said that it was due to the number of processes in my task bar. They said it should be around 24, but my has 100.
I am a school teacher and I have Smart Board software which takes up space, but I was wondering how I should know which processes to delete/ end.
I tried deleting programs and I somehow lost my sound icon on my toolbar,:(:(
If someone could help, I would appreciate it.
Pam

In different operating systems, the number of processes will vary. However, in windows vista, there are usually many processes going on as it is a more complex operating system than windows xp. You can lower the number of processes by doing some service tweaks and uninstalling useless programs that originally came with your computer (junkware). Refer to this guide:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html?filter[11]=Performance%20Maintenance

Thanks. I disabled too many services last night and lost all connection. I put them back on manual and restored connection this morning. Things seem to be working better. I will check out the website. I appreciate the help.

Same thing happened to me recently.

Get your Internet Service Provider to make "House Call". Get them to test your modem.

My modem was 4 years old and it died. I have Rogers Hi-Speed Express (10 MB/s download ; 512 kb/s updload).

When my modem died, my download speed changed from 10 MB/s to 34 kb/s:eek:.

The average life expectancy of a modem seems to be ~ 2 years.

Something was wrong with the connection and now the computer seems to be working well. Our provider was able to check it from their office when I called. I am able to change websites quickly.
My brother-in-law said that with Vista, it is normal to have many processes working. (????)
I tried to download VistaForums SysInfo Tool but I couldn't open it.
Thanks for the help.

Yes in vista usually it is normal to have 50-100 processes going on as it is a complex and heavy operating system.

eventhough that is true, you should still run the tweaks just to optimize your computer.

It's a self-executing program. You should just have to double-click on it. What did you try to open it with?
