I have Windows Vista 64 bit and have been experiencing problems AGAIN. I have to actually pull the plug on the computer to restart it because a message keeps coming up saying I have another instance of Windows mail running in the back ground. I THOUGHT the problem was solved when we un-installed and re-installed Norton but it worked for about a week and now I have the same problem all over again. I can open the mail ONCE and the when I exit and try to go back in. it says " Another instance of Windows mail is running in the background. I can't even go to Start/ re start. I have to unplig everything. Has anyone else had this happen?

You should also be able kill it from Task Manager/Processes.

You should never just pull the plug. Hold the power button for about 20 seconds will do relatively the same thing. But do it enough times and you could physically kill your Hard Drive and all data on it.

It could be Norton, try turning off Mail Scanning in Norton and see if the problem continues. If not, get rid of norton (recommended anyway). Even avast is a better solution than Norton. Or uninstall norton and leave it uninstalled and get Avast free for the time being, (NOT AVG). I personally recommend Live OneCare or NOD32.

See the following thread,, read all of it and try the solutions in it,, the problem is not the same but the solutions may work.

That's what I do, I turn the power strip off for 20 seconds. Which I figure is the same thing as pulling the plug. I also tried going into something called Task Manager and it never shows Windows mail as running when this happens.

Try by clicking the box at the bottom "Show Processes from all users".

It should be winmail.exe, I think

And yes,, turning off the power strip is the same thing, don't do it.
Hold the power button on the tower for 20 sec or till it turns off,, and leave off for at least 30 sec before powering back on. You need to leave time for the HDD to spin down or it could strip the gears in it.

There is no box. All I have on the taskbar is the time, and the sound
