Solved access denied

I recently had to do a full recovery on my PC. Of course I have to reinstall a lotta stuff lol and I'm doing that. Now I had this error before 1) on first getting the pc 2) the last time I had to do a recovery - and of course I'm getting again this time. I lost the documentation from last time I tried to fix this error.

So the background is this: I have a 2nd internal drive that I loaded and use on this PC. This second drive is used to store 'nothing but my music'. This second drive actually was installed as a 2nd drive on my old XP PC. But to make a long story short I get this 'access denied' error on trying to use it to load my music. Now some of the music on it of course is 'protected' having been bought at iTUnes.

I have the application loaded: TAKE OWNERSHIP. But I can't even see whats on the drive. I tried going into security and changing permissions, but I still get that error.

I am the only user on this PC. And I have disabled UAC (user account control).

I'd appreciate someone telling the quick and easy way of fixing this issue. Thanks.

Don't change permissions, add permissions. Go to D:\ and right click on it and click on Properties and then on the Security Tab. Click on Edit and then on Add and then on Advanced and then on Find Now. Locate your username and click on it and then Add it. When back on the main screen, click on your username and Edit and make sure you give yourself Full Rights and save it.

Now click on Advanced and do the same thing in the Special Properties section at the botton. When adding yourself, be sure to check the box to make the change inheritable. Now click on the Ownership Tab and make yourself the Owner of the Drive. That should do it for permissions and ownership.

If you run into trouble, the following may help you:

To see your permissions, right click the folder/file, click on properties, and check out the security tab. Check to see what permissions you have by clicking on your username (or user group). Here are the types of permissions you can have: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-permissions. You need to be an administrator or the owner to change permissions (and sometimes being an administrator or even an owner isn't enough - there are ways to block even them from access (though a smart administrator knows these ways and can get around them - but usually shouldn't because they were denied access usually for a very good reason). To fix this problem with the folders, take ownership of the folders or the drive (as an administrator) and give yourself full rights. Right click the folder/drive, click on properties, go to the security tab and click on Advanced and then click on the Owner tab. Click edit and then click the name of the person you want to give ownership to (you may need to add it if it isn't there - or it may be yourself). If you want it to apply to sub-folders and files within that folder/drive, then check the box for replace owner on sub-containers and objects and click OK. Back out and now there's a new owner for the folders/drive and files who can change permissions as needed. I suspect this will resolve the problem except perhaps for the protected music/video files that were downloaded. I'm not quite certain how to restore access to them if the above works in general but just not for these types of files - but will do more research if that turns out to be the case. Just post back and let us know.

P.S. Not related, but I recommend you upgrade to SP2 and then install all the other updates you've missed in the meantime. It's best to keep your system up-to-date so everything works as well as possible and you remain as secure from threats as possible.
