Is there any advantage to using one or the other? Does one work better on Linux?

If your just running smoothwall then all you want is the cheapest chip you can find, forget about whats better, for smoothwall it would make no difference.

Correct, most of them are not competent enough to be crooks, or make a good cpu for that matter.
they are not pointless........they may be just a tad slower than your E8400...... (not your E5200... your dreamin dude) but there is a $100 price difference between the two.....
