HD can be worn out? Really?

When you defrag a HDD It is basically moving large amounts of Data to be easily "Seen" by the computer this requires a Lot of Reading and Writing on the HDD - Which means over time the HDD will eventually Crash most within 5-10 Years

Hope This Helps,
Josh

I have set a reminder in Task Scheduler to remind me every 3 Months but I will also do a Defrag if I have cleaned up my system from installed apps that I install and forget to use. what about you Rich?

The first thing that I did, or almost the first, was take defrag off task scheduler. I defrag after I use the analyze function and it shows 10% or more. I had my first computer, Windows 98, from 2000 to 2008 and the HD was going strong.
Do you agree with my approach?

Yeah I agree but most times it is up to other peoples' opinions As long as they don't Defrag as much as they Run a Virus scan otherwise their HDD Is on deaths door ;)

I defrag only when auslogic recommends it. How about registry defrag? Does it jeopardize HDD health?

Just stay away from any of the registry stuff, not needed and it can cause bigger problems, this is all that you need.
To maintain your computer

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.
http://www.piriform.com/

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

Optimize Windows 7

I defrag only when auslogic recommends it. How about registry defrag? Does it jeopardize HDD health?

A defrag is not a monolithic thing. To defrag or not defrag. I think a lot depends on how you defrag and the conditions maintained. I get my free space above 70% before defragging. I use a light defragger(now Puran but I've used Auslogics in the past.) Even MyDefrag using the quickie scripts is too thorough for me.

I defrag my system disk several times a week. When I can get rid of large files like video, delete all but one restore point(I have backup images on external drives) and maximize my free space, then I'll turn on the Puran options like optimize directories, fill gaps etc..

Even will all the non-booting opts on, seldom does the defrag take 1/2 hour. Most of my defrags are in the range of 10 minutes. Doesn't beat up the HD. Also I notice the performance start to lag if I defrag less than that. Most people probably run their system disk with a lot more than 30% used. As I have owned machine after machine I ran at 80% system disk used, then to 40% and now I won't defrag until the get rid of the crap and reduce the used space to 30% or less. I put all the crap that used to clog my system disk on externals. On those I just do the quickie defrag with no options in Puran.

When you have over 70% disk space free, defrags are much faster and work the HD much less.

Nothing spurs a religious argument like defrag threads, but this method works for me.

It seems when it comes to defrag, the word extreme comes to mind. Too often and too infrequent can similarly wear out the HDD. When HDD is too cluttered, it works harder and therefore can wear out from toiling.

So, I will stay right in the middle....moderation....only when auslogic says so. BTW, I have 80% Free space(266 GB free of 298 GB). And you guys operate with merely 20% free?

Hello!

Moderation: perfect! Exactly what is needed! Well, some of us have quite a lot of data; I have 1TB of data, at least, soem people have much more.

I don't even know what some of it is!

EDIT: Registry Cleaners are a bad idea for many reasons. MilesAhead probably knows more about this than me, but I think that Registry Defragmenters are just database cleaners/pruners.

If something goes wrong, you are really scruged. I don't think there is much need at all for this on any machine, although to be fair to them, I think they are far safer than registry cleaners, although I personally would never use one.

Richard

Defragging is definitaly more of an issue these days with new storage technologies like SAN and Virtualisation. Especially in the work-place! I use a fully automatic defragger that works in the back-round and goes to work as soon as fragmentation takes place. Saves you having to worry about when to defrag. Very handy if you use your computer a lot!

Yeah, but I am not sure that they are ever needed! It is all reverse engineering, so all of it is guesswork. Every single value changed or deleted is the result of a bored programmer sitting in a boring office making a guess while looking at the clock.

Registry defragmentation on the other hand is based on a programmers experience of data base pruning and cleaning. This is not just guesswork. This is also based on tried and tested facts.

I will never endorse either, but we have got to be fair and open minded on a public forum. I don't think that registry defragmentation is what it says on the tin, or nearly as dangerous.

Just my humble opinion!

Great advice Rich, everyone on the BSOD squad agrees. We do not use the same reasons, but we all know that the cleaners cause nothing but trouble and many times BSODs.

I don't know who "you guys" is but right now my Vista system drive has 91% free space. And I'm not preparing for a defrag. I just put video and large data on externals.

I must be the exception to the rule.
I use two cleaners CCleaner and Glary Utilities
My drives are all full and I use a Registry defragger
I also defrag all my drives.
I have never had a BSOD ever.

EDIT: I also run sfc /scannow on a schedule.
