Solved Backing up a software CD?

M

mdiemer

I have music creation software called Sonar. It's an older version but I love it and plan to continue using it indefinitely. Because it's old, I am concerned that if I were to lose the installation CD's, I would never be able to get it back as it is no longer sold. So, can I copy the CD to another CD? I've been told that Sonar allows you to do this, but I don't know how. My computer does have a CD burner, but only one. Is there a way to do this with just one CD burner?

I used the link provided by Mr. Towns and that worked fine. However, I ran into a new problem: One of the Sonar DVDs is over 5 GB. I thought I would just be able to burn part of it and then Windows would tell me to insert a new DVD to finish the rest. But it apparently doesn't work that way. So...is there a way to do this? Split up the DVD so that it can be burned to two DVD-Rs? Perhaps by choosing the other format option, where you use it as a hard drive rather than the all-at-once option?

I'm not for sure but Nero may automatically ask you for another disk. I've never tried to burn more that the disk capacity. Also I don't have much experience using windows to burn a disk. As you found out 5 gb is too large for a single layer dvd. It would have fit on a dual layer dvd. Since they are double the capacity of a single layer disk. Generally though cds and dvds are an unreliable backup method. I have lost data to depending upon the data on a cd being good only to find out (a little too late) that it was bad.
