Backing up Computer

Re: Backing up Computer (**UPDATE HELP NEEDED)

OK - back to my computer upgrade project. My new hard drive came today. Here's a recap.....I thought I did it correctly but can't confirm.....backed everything up using Macrim.

I would simply like to do a clean reinstall of Vista and make sure my new hard disk is configured.

Based on the messages I was getting, it looks like I knocked out my OS as well as my boot.mgr. I attempted to do a startup repair from my original disk but no luck.

I guess first things first, what is the easiest way for my to manually configure the computer so it boots up?????? If I could at least boot up, I can look at the other issues, even attempting to restore what I thought I had saved via macrim.

My hard drive is a WD500 gb and seemed to install with no issues.

I do have my 2 Toshiba disk which came with the computer.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to help, but I think its a good time to throw in the disc that says "installation - part 1" or something along those lines and to do a clean install with formatting.

Of course you're allowed to chime in and help. I did try that but keep getting the following msg.

PREINST2.SWM
Type: SWM file
Size: 644 MB

then, it eventually goes to an error msg. I thinked I really hacked things up as I have been trying so many different combos.

Anyway, any suggestions on how to fix the boot mgr?????

If you actually have an install DVD, all you have to do is boot from the CD. You must set your computer to boot from the CD, first however
Boot Priority - Change

You will get the best results if you use the install DVD as you can install with format.
Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

All this assumes that you did not follow the directions when you made your Macrium Copy. Macrium's instructions include information on how to make a Macrium Boot CD, the first time you make an image. You are suppose to boot from that CD and it takes you right to your image. In any event, when this problem is solved make a new image and make a boot cd.

Just a thought, with another computer you may be able to make a Macrium Boot CD and try to use it in your problem computer.

I think the error he is receiving is from a faulty installation disc, not sure if its the factory one, but it seems to be missing a file, which tends to happen when you use higher speeds for burning a CD.

If you do have a second computer, I would recommend booting from a USB (if you have one, preferably 2-4gb), if not, try asking a friend for one of their installation disc's, no matter the OS, just to get your computer to boot up and after that you can figure out your problem with your current disc if you want to return back to vista.
