Backup Error 0x80070002

I have a Toshiba laptop 32bit, Intel Core Duo T6400 @ 2.0 GHz, 3.0GB Mem. My last backup in December went well. Now when I activate "back up files" the process stops while attempting to create a shadow backup and I get "the system cannot find the specific file (0x80070002). I can see from Google searches this is not new but these seems to be no one answer. The only things I've added recently is the SW for the Flip video recorder and Microsoft Security Essentials. One a scale of 10 I am a 5 or 6 in terms of "techi" expertise. Any help will be much appreciated.

I have had that happen a time or two. First, make sure the drive or media that you have been backing up to with the last backup file is connected. You may be getting that message because it, as the error message says, can't fine that last backup file for that reason.

I have actually had the app fail to find the last backup even though the external drive is connected and I can "see" the file is there. In that case, what I have had to do is select the option to create a new backup which will take longer as it backs up everything, not just what has changed. However, first you need to have the backup app forget *all* the old backups - you can
launch an elevated command prompt (I trust you know how to do that) and type the following at the commandline --

wbadmin delete catalog

.. this will clear the all the old backup data from the backup
catalog. I then delete the old backup file to create needed space then do a new backup.

Phil, thanks for the hints. My external drive was properly connected. And I am afraid I am not versed on doing an "elevated command prompt". Many of the other hints discuss getting into the "registry" which is also outside my realm.

What I did was abandon the Vista backup. My Seagate external drive came with a backup program and I used it with no issues. Perhaps later on when I've more time and can work with someone more skilled than I, I will try again to fix this issue.

to run an elevated command prompt, click on the "Start" button, then "All Programs", open the Accessories folder, right click on 'Command Prompt" and select the "Run as administrator" option from the menu.
