best antivirus for vista home premium ?

The best AntiVirus one can come up with, is to get a decent antivirus and security package, a decent antispyware program, if one isn't included with antivirus or security package, don't open email that you don't know where it come from and avoid sites like porn site.

God don't take my pron. Its the biggest draw on the net.

But your right. But even the best of surfing habits can find one unexpectedly redirected by a simple cookie. And your staring at the backside of you don't know what.

For those unexpected redirects you need a goog line of security that can whack them before they get you.

My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.
I have tested Avira, Avast, AVG, Kaspersky and trend and on and on, but the best was always the same.

For a free reliable AV its AVAST. Hands down. Avira has to many false positives.

Paid! 3 years running strong...NOD32.

My opinion. But alot of my clients agree and have been continually renewing their licences every year. Totaly satisfied.

I tried useing Avira but had to go back and remove it to many times.

I have Avast on my Windows Vista 64 Ultimate and it just sits there doing its thing, I am no expert on Anti-Virus but it appears to do it's job and doesn't cost money, frankly when you contrast the fact that Avast have a no cost 64 bit compatible Anti-Virus software whilst the likes of Norton can not even get around to producing a 64 bit compatible version of the Ghost copy utility, one would have to say to Avast, well done folks! for their support of the 64 bit community.

Best and Warm Regards
Adrian Wainer

Absoultly. Doing nothing. I use to use Avast Home, but free software is not always the best solution... and than one day I was compairing other AV's.

Avast updates once a day (maybe twice if your lucky).
Avira updates five or more times a day.

Are we sure Avast has good protection? I'm not entirely sure.

I first took a look at the history of there AV signatures.

Virus Update of Signature Definition File - Avira AntiVir History

This is the main reason I removed Avast Home and went with Avira AntiVir Premium.

For how little Avira costs a year it has much better detection than Avast Home.

I beg to differ on NOD32 too!!!

I use Avira AntiVir Personal Edtion Premium, and have for last 2 years.

Here are the real stats.

AV-Comparatives

Click comparatives link on the page and check Febuary 2008 results.

Avira - 99.6%
Nod32 - 97.7%

Thats on an XP test system, AV comparatives have yet to release Vista testing. Avira has done well of late, they last failed VB100% in 2007 on a Windows 2000 test system. Avira had not submitted their product for any Vista tests except Business edition where it received a VB100%. They have 14 pass, 3 fail and 43 no submissions at VB. Usually a "No submission" means a vendor's product is either not ready for that platform or they know it won't pass, it's unsure why Avira has so many non submissions at VB.
Eset has a record 51 VB100% awards, with only 3 failures, the last in 2002 on a Suse Linux setup. 5 no submissions, all before 2001.

Also, look at one very telling statistic at AV Comp tests, Avira listing for False Positives - Many...Eset - None.
At almost every worthy AV testing facility, even 1 false positive is 1 too many and will cause an immediate failure.
Eset also always beats Avira on Polymorphic varients, which are todays most dangerous ones. Overall I would rate Eset higher than Avira, and so do almost all Independent AV testing labs that have any merit.

I tested Malware for almost 10 years as an Independent. I've tested and decompiled over 1200 virus and 750 trojans, and submitted reports to 12 different AV companies. I'm bound by contract to never reveal who I tested for & reported too, but if you pick the top 12 AV companies today, probably 10 of them were on my list...

You don't look before you leap!!!
That program is a Trojan!!!!
It's been written up all over the internet.
If you do a Google search on it, you'll also find the way to remove it.

Being a professional PC tech, I have to install an AV program for my customers that doesn't make them jump thru hoops to update or RE-REgister the program at regular intervals. Also it must be FREE and keep all the baddies off of their PC's.
The only program I've ever found that satisfies all my criteria, and I've tested most of them, is AVG 8.0 FREE.

The 8.0 version now incorporates Anti-Spyware and Anti-Trojan protection in addition to its great Anti-Virus protection.
I still install the latest version of "Spybot Search & Destroy" which also has increased their protection against Trojans.

With just these two programs I can pretty much guarantee that a system will stay clean and safe. 'Works for Me!"
Did I mention.......both programs are still 100% FREE, and don't even demand any registration to be fully functional.
You can remain totally anonymous and still be safe. I like that!:geek:

Cheers Mates!

If your looking for a free antivirus, AVG is the way to go.

If you want to pay for one, McAfee is the very best. Don't get Norton, it's not that great.

As a Computer Security professional, I have to supply my 'Home Computer' customers with a program that's both FREE and EFFECTIVE while also being transparent and not requiring registration, re-registration or re-payment.
I've tried almost every AV program on the market and the only one that fills all my criteria is AVG 8.0 FREE. The newest version (8.0) also protects you from Spyware and Trojans. If you want, you can add a little extra Spyware/Trojan protection with "Spybot Search & Destroy" and you're home FREE.
It only runs when you run it and is totally NON-Invasive, while providing your browsers with a very long list of web sites to avoid.
That's great protection against re-direct's to bad sites.

Norton and McAfee are NEVER FREE, will seriously BLOAT your computer and are equally hard to remove from your computer should you ever want to. Both of those companies have been forced to create special removal tools to get their products off of a PC.

After a user (lady) had just paid Norton for an upgrade, it reported one virus which it said it could not remove. She called me in complete frustration.
I disabled Norton, installed AVG FREE and did a scan. It found and removed the one virus that Norton said it could not remove and then found 150 more which it completely removed. The lady was furious at Norton and called the company and demanded her money back.
She was more than glad for me to totally remove Norton AV and make AVG her permanent Anti Virus program.
I also installed "Spybot Search & Destroy" for her and did a scan, removing a ton of spyware.
Norton and McAfee do NOT protect against spyware.

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?
