BlueScreen of Death

Hello everyone!

This is my first post and first time on this board. I was directed here after a thread I made on the notebookreview.com forums because they said I would be able to get some help here regarding my first BlueScreen of Death.

I am running...
*Lenovo T400
*Vista Home Premium 32bit

I believe the problem lies in the USB Flash Drive I've been using, though I am not completely sure. Every time I plug in the flash drive, a screen comes up saying that it is damaged, and must be scanned/fixed. Unfortunately, I cannot scan/fix it because it is "in use" when it's plugged in (or so it says). I used it many times with the "fix it" window popping up without problems, so I didn't see any issues coming up in the near future. I was only using Chrome for website browsing, when I decided to plug in my flash drive to transfer some files. RIGHT after I plugged it in, the Blue Screen showed up.

And the only thing I recently installed was "PerformanceTest v7.0" which benchmarks my computer's performance. I just uninstalled it though.

Lastly, I was told to .rar a minidump file, but I cannot find anything in the minidump folder.

Go to C > Windows > Minidump > zip up the dump file and upload it with your next post.
You may need to save it to your desktop first.
When it is uploaded, we will take a look at it for you.

You may want to look in your document folder as that is where I found mine. Don't know how they got there. This is my suggestion as I am not a certified tech here at VF.
I had problem with Avast New Free version and BSOD. Then new updated verson of 5.0.396 is working fine and no more BSOD since then.

I did an advanced search, and this is the file I came up with. The date modified is 2/3/10 8:27am, and the BSOD happened at about 12:00am so I'm not sure what's with the dates, or if this is even the correct file.

This is what the dump file came up with.

Probably caused by fastfat.sys.

Fastfat.sys is the driver for FAT16 and FAT32.

Usual causes: Disk corruption, insufficient physical memory, Device driver, Indexing, Resident antivirus, backup, defrag programs, Disk/Drive failing/failure

"Windows Vista does not officially support booting from a FAT32 drive, although it is technically possible. Vista supports FAT32 on Flash drives and hard drives, although it will not format a hard drive over 32 GB as FAT32". (from WikiAnswers)

I would start by downloading the HDD testing software from your HDD manufacturer and running it.

Also, you need to run a file check, follow this tutorial.

It may be worth trying another AV, (just till this is sorted).

As you are cleaning house, download these two free apps and run them.

Could the disk corruption be caused by a plugged-in USB Flash Drive? A flash drive I use is damaged/corrupted because it used to be pulled out manually without being "ejected" or "safely removed", and it prompts to fix the drive each time it is plugged in. Also, the BSOD occurred almost IMMEDIATELY after I had plugged in the flash drive last night.

I am using CCleaner already, and I will run the file check when I get home though.

It would depend on what data is on the flash drive, if it is in FAT32 format, and if it is interacting with the OS, then i would say yes, it is possible, actually, more than likely.

Take the USB flash drive out and leave it out. If the BSOD's stop, then it was most likely the problem.
