Boot Scan Fail

Was recently infected by the "Vista AntiVirus Pro 2010" virus and in the end, had to run a boot scan with avast to get rid of it. Virus is clear now but no program is working correctly. Every single program on my computer is asking for you to locate the file like in the screenshot below. And if I close the program and re-open, I'll need to find it all over again every time. For the love of god, help me!

Try this Go to search, type in default programs. Once there click associate programs. Inside, set up the programs with the correct way to access them.

lul funny story, it popped up again even when I clicked Default Programs from the search menu, but I got it anyway. .exe isn't in the list. I can understand why but just to make it more clear, it isn't with actual files e.g songs or videos this is occuring with, but with the actual programs themselves such as Firefox, Windows Media Player, MSN etc.

I think that the quick answer would be a system restore from about a week before the problem or

Use revo to uninstall the programs and then install again.
Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs, Solve uninstall problems


After a virus is removed, it should be gone, but some of the damage it caused can remain.

Yeah I was thinking about system restoring alright, but was slightly put off it as while I had the virus, I tried to system restore and when the laptop booted up again, nothing would start other then a black backround, the virus and a notice saying "system restore failed for reason unknown." But would you think it should be ok now? I'd be restoring back to when I didn't have Avast, as I got it prior to Nortons failure in detecting the virus but I could always just re-download that anyway.

If it were my computer I would give it a full virus scan and then download this

Malwarebytes.org

and scan again.

If clean I would go back far enough with System Restore to make sure that the date was prior to any virus.

Now try system restore, If you canno,t try in safe mode. You know hit f8 rapidy during boot.

While you try that I will get some other doucmention for the next step if the above does not work

When we are done do not worry about AVast

Go to the MS site and download Microsoft Security essentials.

Its free and good. Use it in conjuction with the Malwarebytes that I already told you about.

Just to add to the sound advice given by richc46, have you checked to see if your file system is in good order, follow this tutorial and post back with your results.
If an error is found, you may need to run the scan again.

I ran a comprehensive scan earlier today and everything seems to be fine. Was about to follow that SFC tutorial and well... pressed Windows + R to start Run. Typed in cmd and got the following. o_O

Type cmd in search, if that is the way you want to start. Then right click on the cmd and run as adminstrator, do not hit enter.

This does work, but I've never had any troubles running cmd via Run prior to the virus. Is it possible it simply just changed some setting on my computer giving me less administrative rights?

Doing the CMD, will not hurt, but it was my opinion from the beginning, that more is needed. Try the SFC, if you are happy with the results fine, IF there are still problems we have to go back to my suggestiions.

Whether its less adminsitrative rights or something else, the virus made changes, which we want to correct.

Bottom line, you will get back to normal.

Have just come back from running system restore to a point one week ago. Seems to have made absolutely no difference.

Are you certain that you went back far enough before the problem/virus started?

Yeah, I'm positive the virus hadn't infected by that time.

If that does not help, run it several times. If still does not help, uninstall the programs as instructed previously with Revo and then install. Try it with only one program and see what happens. If no success report back. If it works do it with all the programs.

The command to enter from the tutorial didn't seem to work but I found a similar one by typing "sfc /scannow" and got this result

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was 
unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.

Restarting now :P

Run that another two times, if the results are the same do the repair install, with the DVD, as I indicated, previously.

Scannow fixes only one file at a time.
