Boot Up Problem

Hey everyone, this is my first post... I've been having problems for a while now where every now and then my PC would boot up in 600x800 Res. And just this past weekend it won't stop happening, every time I try to boot up it is in 600x800 res. Also there's no way for me to adjust this once it's booted because none of my i/o devices are being recognized (Keys, mouse, headset, even the ethernet ports are not being recognized.) Some help would be excellent, I really don't feel like reinstalling the OS Also I'm running 64-Bit Vista Ultimate. My PC knowledge is decent, there's a heck of a lot I don't know though.

Every I/o device needs a driver to work. If you fill in your system specs (lower left corner of your posts) so we know what kind of hardware you have we can help you locate and install them. You video is displaying the 800x600 because thats the only resolution it can display without the driver

Every I/o device needs a driver to work. If you fill in your system specs (lower left corner of your posts) so we know what kind of hardware you have we can help you locate and install them. You video is displaying the 800x600 because thats the only resolution it can display without the driver

But the thing is the drivers just randomly stopped working... they were fine on Friday and I did a restart for an update with my Anti-Virus and then it just started booting in the 800x600 res. And I can't install the driver for my V Card after the PC boots because nothing works...

And also what kind of system specs are you looking for? I feel like such a noob askign that

hey not to worry everyone starts as a noob

system specs

computer maker, model, ram, cpu, etc

if you look in the lower left corner of your post you will see a thing labeled system specs. Just click on it and fill in whatever you can about your computer. In you case we need the things whose drivers arent working.

BTW it may be your virus update, or a vista update.

This has happened beforeo though, and the Anti-Virus wasn't updated for my restart. It was just an every day shut down. And the next time I rebooted it, it was in 800x600 res and none of the drivers were working. So I don't know if that has a whole lot to do with it :/

something has to be causes the settings to be forgotten. how about we look in event viewer (type event viewer in search). go to the windows logs, applications tab and look for any errors (red "X" in left ocrner) that re-occur around the times when you boot up. tell us what the event ID and source codes are

If this is any help at all, I had a flash drive plugged in at the time of the problem and it saved this text file on the flash drive which I just found earlier...

Im sorry its n ot you its me. Im helping both here and in win 7 and when it gets hectic I have a tendancy to go to warp drive.

If you cant boot up normally you might be able to boot into safe mode. you probably can because in safe mode (hit F8 repeatedly when booting) non of the drivers are loaded.

there is one thing you can do. its called a system file check. its easy and not destructive to your data. to run it you go to start>search>type cmd>right click and run as admin>type sfc /scannow and tell us the results

haha don't even worry about and I totally forgot about safe mode... I'll have to give that a try later, thank's for the help! I'll get back to you with more details after I give safe mode a try and what-not. Thanks again!

With Vista, at least in my experiences, there shouldn't be many drivers that Vista doesn't take care of for you. So I don't think it will do much good to install them again unless you have to.
If you have access to a voltage meter, I guess it would be a cheap check on the CMOS Battery as mention above, but if that was going out I think you'd be having troubles far before you notice the resolution.
If you have recently added new hardware remove it and its driver completely for a while and see if that doesn't fix something.

I am leaning towards Virus
Anti virus programs have been known to miss now and then. I am sure something below is mentioned above already but...
If you can boot up, login, and just get to an idle in Windows normal mode. Then do the Ctrl-Alt-Delete thingy to get to TASK MANAGER. Go to the PROCESSES TAB. DO NOT have any programs running and click on the CPU heading so that System Idle is first and everything else descends from there (Picture below). If a program is using resources that you have no clue what it is, Google the "said.exe" name in left column. Check a few out. Then with it up try install one of the missing drivers and see if an unfamiliar .exe spikes while loading and you lose that driver google that one. If you are having trouble getting booted and logged in try it in SAFE MODE.
Do you have any disk utility software that has bootable media like System Mechanic? If so run a registry scan and see if there is a correlation in grouped errors. Some of these programs also have virus checking functions in them as well. So maybe close down your Active Antivirus so it doesn't conflict and run a different one. Some Internet providers offer Full Antivirus Programs like Mcafee or supplemental scans and utilities for free. Check with them. But also know some are horrible to try to remove completely.

While you are there downad all the drivers you need, video and sound, wireless etc and then disconnect from the internet, uninstall the antivirus, then install the drivers one by one. Reinstall the antivirus when you are done.

I would do this but I can't do anything when i get to my desktop because my i/o devices don't work.

I can't boot in safe mode because when I get to "Windows Error Recovery" screen my arrow keys won't let me move the option up or down to get to "Safe Mode." This feature has never worked ever on this computer. I can't even press "Enter," I just have to wait for the seconds to count down.

We can get you to boot. but your best bet is probably going to be a clean install. let us know what you want to do
