I re-installed vista and for some reason my Local Disk (C) is filled with red instead of the normal blue color. (Thing that shows me how much space is taken up).
Zig you said re-installing Vista on the same Drive would do a complete clean. How come all of my files are still there from before? How can we get rid of everything?

Did you do a reformat too? That means your old files are still there.

Maybe your Mobo has deteriorated. Do you have a buddy or someone with a spare Mobo that is compatible with the critical components of your build to loan you for testing. Maybe a local computer shop has a used one you can cut a deal for by offering a loaner deposit to take it home for testing. If in fact it is the Mobo, they only stand to sale you a new one.

Sounds to me like its a registry key that wont allow desktop changes. Something that schools and businesses use to lessen user changes. Go to this key and post the results.

start search > regedit > hit enter > accept UAC prompt > in regedit at the top of the window choose 'Edit' > then 'Find' > type this NoActiveDesktop > it will take awhile to find, then post back whether it is 0 or 1 > There should be 4 other keys in this folder > post back whether they are 0 or 1 also.

Thanks.

morning. well its still looking like the problem is not going away. Im beginning to think hardware. Like I suggested you might want to remove one stick of ram and try it. you can also download memtest86 and run a comprehensive test of the memory.

I know the buil is custom but we need more info

mobo
cpu,
etc

Why the mobo drivers and which one? You can download updated drivers from the manufacturers website for the hardware.

This is Rob's brother and I have been working through the problem with him.
Basically it isn't the Motherboard and/or registry keys...

We got onto the desktop magically and reinstalled vista on the C Drive. This was where the old Vista was as well. Then we installed the ALL of the drivers that were on the disc that came with our Motherboard, which might be the problem. We did a restart and now every time we boot up it says we are missing a digitally signed file. The old Vista files are still on there and we never got rid of them if that has anything to do with it.

Our problem now is getting past that screen on boot up that says we need a digitally signed file. We can't click on anything or use any of the options because of our USB Keyboards. So in the meantime we are looking for a PS2 Keyboard...

ps/2 keyboards can be found on ebay, at newegg, radio shack, etc. they are cheap. Are the current usb keyboards plugged into the computer or a usb hub?

I am not running the Keyboards through a hub. They are just plugged in directly to the Mobo in the back.

If you ever reinstall Vista, make sure you format the drive to remove all the old stuff.

When you install Vista, choose the advanced options, then in any partitions click delete, then format again.

Alright, just a little update for everyone.

We reinstalled Vista. Deleted the windows.old folder or whatever it's called. Everything was running fine for about a day; we were able to reboot and install some drivers and everything was good. Then it started to boot again with the same problem... (i/o devices not working) We finally were able to get a ps/2 keyboard and even when we boot in safe mode the same problem occurs. We are completely stuck on what to do here so if any one has any more information for us please share!

Thanks,
Sean (Rob's Brother)
