Hi everyone.I am having problems with a friends laptop.I can not load Vista by normal/safe mode or by using the repair option on the instalation disc.I did manage to get the OS to load once and all seemed to be working well.I performed scans with (the already installed) McAfee virus scanner and with Spybot , which I installed from a USB key drive. Both scans were completely clean.I decided to run a disk check via TuneUp (which I also installed via USB key). When I restarted to complete the disk check it refused to boot again.I can get startup repair to run from DVD but although it claims to have fixed the problem it hasn't.
The problem reported by startup repair is corrupted system volume information. Is there any way to fix this? I know this is a sign that the HDD is failing and I don't want to lose the data on this drive.Iwas wondering if it would be possible for me to boot Vista from an external HDD.I realize I would have to change BIOS settings and am able to do so.
Any help or suggestions is very much apprciated.
