Solved BSOD after upgrade system

Just a quick update:
placed stick 1 and 2 for 3 days in slot 1A and 1B -> NO BSOD
Placed stick 1 and 2 for 3 days in slot 2A and 2B -> nog BSOD. Also got 9 passes with memtest (both sticks in the computer).

Tomorrow I'm going to place stick 3 and 4 in slot 1A and 1B...

My Computer

Yesterday I placed stick 3 and 4 in slot 1A and 1B
Just had a BSOD. At the time I was playing poker + streaming the news (I often get these BSOD's while streaming video).

I plan on testing the memory tonight with memtest86 and see what it says...

Strange thing is that I was able to work about a week with stick 1 and 2 without a BSOD.

The last BSOD said something about USBport.sys.... any idea if this is related?
tnx for any suggestions!

Usbport.sys is a Microsoft Driver and most likely not the cause. It is a lead driver and it is reported as the cause when other drivers are the actual culprits
Finish up with your tests and then we will review them all and discuss what we have found out.

Another quick update.
Performed a memtest with stick 3 and 4 in slot 1A and 1B
9 passes - no errors.

But I did notice something. It says the ram settings are at 666Mhz.
When I go into the bios it also shows 667 Mhz.

I've got CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 sticks.
Shouldn't this be a 1600Mhz in this case?

if so, could this cause my issues - and how do I correct this as the setting is 'greyed out' in my bios screen.

My Computer

Was able to change the memory clock to: 800Mhz DDR3_1600
This should be more correct. But could a too low memory clock cause BSOD's?

Do I need to change anything to the DRAM Voltage?

My Computer

I would not adjust voltage at this point. Finish up the testing and lets see where we go from there. Over clock or underclock can cause problems

So yesterday I changed the BIOS settings to match the type of Ram I have (It was on 667Mhz - DDR3 - 1333 and I switched it to 800Mhz - DDR3 - 1600)

Tonight I performed another memtest with stick 3 and 4 in position 1A and 1B
1800 errors after 8 passes...
What now?
Does it mean the Ram is faulty? Do I need to place these sticks in 2A and 2B and test again? Or better first test the other 2 sticks (that didn't give a BSOD yet) in 1A and 1B?

My Computer

1800 errors certainly seems faulty, but I would use the good sticks to test 1a and b

Tested stick 1 & 2 in position 1A & 1B.

8 passes 0 errors.

I plan to do a final test.
Placing stick 3 & 4 in position 2A & 2B and performing the memtest.
If I see again a lot of errors I think we have proven that this set is faulty and I will request a RMA.
correct?

My Computer

Yes, looks like there are problems. I have heard of situations that you can RMA with based upon the results that you have just showed me.

So to 'really' confirm that my stick 3 and 4 are faulty I wanted to do a final test.
I placed them in position 2A and 2B and did a memtest (hoping to spot some errors).
However after 10 passes 0 errors were found. :(

so I placed them back in 1A and 1B started gaming yesterday evening and got 2 BSOD's (attached).
I redid the memtest tonight and I got about 50 errors. It's less then the 1000+ last time but still...
(The errors always seem to occur in test 5 and 7).

I now placed the 'faulty' stick 3 and 4 back in 2A and 2B.
i plan to do another memtest tonight. I would hope they would at least give one error.
What do you think?
Still try an RMA of these 2 sticks or are some extra tests needed with these new results?

My Computer

There appears to be a definite ram problem. I am not there, once you are satisfied that it is the stick and not the socket, go for the RMA.

OK I'll start up the RMA.
Just thought that it was strange that I couldn't reproduce the errors in the 2A and 2B slots.
(although stick 1 and 2 work in both 1A + 1B and 2A + 2B without problems).

i'll keep you informed of the status of the RMA.

@richc46: man, you're living in these forums? I hope they at least pay you for your work/advise? :)

My Computer

The new sticks have arrived and are installed.

My next post will either be a very depressive post because another BSOD occured or a post after a week saying the issue seems to be solved.

fingers crossed!

My Computer

Wish you luck, I think that it will be ok

That is truly wondeful news. I would have been disappointed if the problem return.
Enjoy your computer my friend, you have truly earned it.
I will close the thread.
