BSOD help

Hi, I have a Vista Home Premium 32bit OS, OEM, and I have had this computer for a year.

I bought it from walmart and installed a Nvidia 9500GT video card that was made by MSI. Ever since I have gotten it, I can play games for about 20 minutes or so and then it will BSOD and restart. It will also do the same thing when I pop in a DVD to watch or watch something in Netflix.

I have attached the BSOD dump and system collection file and a Performance Moniter file.

I hope I can solve this without having to buy a new video card.

There are no memory dump files in the uploaded reports. Please try this:

Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service . I recommend Windows Live SkyDrive - http://skydrive.live.com or another free, file-hosting service. Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): Set MiniDump

Your first step is to visit the HP support site and update ALL of your drivers. Once that's done, visit Windows Update and install Service Pack 2, then get the rest of the updates available after that.

For starters, there's an error due to your Norton protection in the MSINFO32 report - and several errors in the Event Viewer log files. Please do the following:

Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the Norton from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: KB Article Not Found
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

This may very well fix your problems - but if it doesn't, we'll need the dump files described above.

18 memory dumps from 23 to 27 Oct 2010 (5 days)
All are STOP 0x116 errors and all blame nvlddmkm.sys (your nVidia graphics card driver)

The first one that I saw was a STOP 0x116 error (more info here: BSOD Index )
I'd suggest following the instructions here: STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting - Windows 7 Forums

In short, make sure that the drivers are updated, that the card has power, that the fans are working and that there's no dust obstructing the cooler (point a house fan into the case to make sure there's enough air) . If all that doesn't work, then try another video card to see if that stops the BSOD's.

You can try these free stress tests also:

FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit

Prime95 download site: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.
