BSOD when I install 2nd stick of RAM

Alright so I ran MEMTEST on the stick 1 and it passes. Put stick 2 into the same slot and rerun the test and on TEST #2 i'm sitting at 1700 errors already and counting.

This would be the 3rd set of RAM that has shown errors on MEMTEST. The other 2 were the same brand and this is a new brand.

Man this is getting frustrating

My Computer

You want matching RAM in all stick. I would consider getting all new matching RAM. I would also go with DDR667.

This was a set of 2x2048. They are matching sticks. I just don't understand. WHat are the chances of me trying 3 different new sets of RAM and all of them having errors in memtest?

My Computer

The sets don't match your spec level. Did you try DDR667 instead of DDR1066?

Ok, i see what your saying about matching, i thought you meant a matching pair.

No, I do not have any 667 right now, i will have to go buy some.

Would the fact that they don't match the spec level of the processor give me errors in memtest?

My Computer

It could. Can you go into your CMOS and set your RAM timing to DDR667?

My old Tyan Thunder K8W server board had a issue using double sided RAM

1-3 sticks: DDR400 RAM setting
4+ sticks: DDR333 RAM setting

It could be incompatibility.

So I set the RAM timing in the BIOS to 667 and started a memtest again on the just the stick that was giving me the errors and it is well past the point where it was giving me the errors and seems to be doing ok, i'm going to let the test finish and then pop the second stick in and see how the system seems.

Test each stick separately twice completely. If they both pass, test both sticks together for 24 hours with no errors. It probably would work, if you leave it set to DDR667. I rather have DDR667 RAM so if the CMOS changes you don't corrupt anything.

Alright I will run those tests and see what happens. I will also look into getting some of that RAM you posted earlier.

Thanks again for all the help today. I will post back with my results, good or bad.

Starting with the correct RAM makes life easier. I found memory tests over 24 hours shows up any problems.

Well the single stick scans both came up clean on multiple scans. So just for the sake of checking I booted up Vista and it ran smoothly for about 3 hrs, even under load of gaming. I started the scan on both sticks still when I went to sleep, and as of this morning the run through with both sticks in has been running for about 12 hrs, and I think it was on 13 successful passes. So things are looking good so far.

Thanks again SCSI and everyone that helped. I'll be sure to post back when tonight or tomorrow.

My Computer

Did you do the 24 hour scan with both sticks set to DDR667? That will verify stability with both sticks.

I hope it works out for you. Wiping the disc clean for a fresh install...headache....I though perhaps your mobo was not liking the sticks you purchased. Now that they are all friendly with each other things just might work out!

If both sticks runs Memtest with no errors for 24 hours, they should work. Just make sure you check your CMOS for the memory setting DDR667, if you update the BIOS or CMOS. If you had DDR667, it would default to it.

Well the Memtest with both sticks in finished the 24 hr scan with no issues, I have been running all weekend blue screen free. The system seems stable, is running fast, and I am very grateful for all the help guys.
