27 years of building computers. I used to buy from Cantek. Bill Canton was the first to sell overclocked computers on the internet. Overclocking is not stable and can cause problems.

benchmarks don't always show what hardware is really capable of doing. I would put a pair of quad core Xeons against a single quad Phenom II doing actual real work.

My advantage will be the entire workstation is server grade. Did you see my RAID 1 benchmarks with the SAS RAID? Vista x64 Ultimate installs in 16 minutes on a USB DVD drive. I wish they made SAS DVD drives.

The 8800 GTS 640MB is getting replaced with a Saphire HD 4870x2 soon. It is my weak spot.

I build because I want the best hardware in my workstation. I buy retail operating systems with no limitations on reinstalling. I change hardware usually yearly. Video cards don't last more than 16 months. I add hard drives. My next motherboard can hold 144 GB of RAM. My two Supermicro enclosures can handle 16 hard drives. The next build will start with a PC Power and Cooling 1200W power supply with a single 100W @ 12V rail. The new X5550 Xeons are lower power than my E5430s. I want the extra 200W for a second 4870x2 ATI Crossfire setup for Photoshop CS4.

Here is a quick question I just thought about. If i buy OEM version of Vista Ultimate 64bit for this system build and a year or so down the road I want to change out mobo and or CPU will i run into problems with validation? Or would it be OK since it probably would be a fresh re-install?

I realize windows 7 is coming so it may not be an issue anyway. I already have beta ISO file on laptop waiting to burn to disk so I might go duel boot with new system.

OEM disks generally only come with 1 license. I could be wrong, but I think it means you can only install it once.

Edit: Just read some stuff about it and you should be okay with an OEM with reinstalling it.

oem disk DO only come with 1 licence and is tied to the machine it was first installed on, this is why they are so cheap. If you add a new mobo then the OEM will not work on the same machine afterwards. You can try it and call MS when required saying the machine went wrong (LIE) and see if they can help with reactivation.

Yeah don't get me wrong I am an avid supporter of paying for your software. I was not sure how an OEM worked since I have no experience with OEM OS's. I bought XP Pro retail when I built the Original System. I believe with the retail version as long as it was only installed on ONE computer you could reactivate after you had extensive hardware changes. Even after one mobo change SOYO Dragon to current P4C800-E it was not needed. Well activating was but I did not have to call Microsoft and get a new key, I don't think..... it was a long time ago. Well either way it was not a problem and no lies needed.

Now before I head off to bed, I got a GPU question. (Mods if need be i can take it to the GPU section) OK I have my old monitor which is a viewsonic VA1912wb 1440x900. It's old but it did the job for a few years. It is starting to have some light bleed along the left edge but nothing terrible. I also have a VIZIO VO22L FHDTV with 2xHDMI and one RGB plus stereo audio. It's native resolution is 1920x1080. It is only used with my XBOX 360 via HDMI. So I was thinking it might make a good monitor for the new rig via the second unused HDMI. What cards should I be looking at for games at that resolution? I also might be thinking of a blue ray drive in the new build.

On a side note same GPU area, any chance to try out a duel monitor set up with the above LCDs? The resolution differences are pretty drastic so I don't know just a thought.

hm..... well almost any card with dvi will do hdmi
a gtx260 or a HD4870 will both give you really good graphics though

The different resolutions aren't a problem. Each screen can be configured independently.

As pizzaman suggested, for 1920x1080 gaming you'd be looking at at the 260 or 4870 and above.
