Cannot change background

Hi,

I have been tearing my hair out since my boy used my PC and somehow has gotten my background (wallpaper) stuck. I have Vista Home Premium 64 and im not longer able to change the wallpaper in the normal manner. If i go through the normal steps it simply doesn't change it, no errors, nothing, it just ignores the new selection.

If i change the path to the selected background (i.e. rename another picture with the name of the picture it's stuck on, this being "Dock.jpg") it changes the picture, but this is the only way to change the background.

Does anyone know how i fix this issue properly?

Hello DnC, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Since this just happened, you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated when you were able to change the wallpaper may help.


If not, then you might see if doing the "Enable changing desktop background" option in the tutorial below may be the issue.

Hi Brink,

Thanks for the info, it's taken me a while to try it all out, but so far no joy.

The reg files downloads don't seem to work for me, says they are not registry scripts and tells me i can only import binary files.

Seems system restore was never enabled, so there are no restore points.

Any other ideas?

Try downloading them again. Next, unhide known file extensions, and check to make sure that the downloaded file has a .reg file extention. If it doesn't, then rename it so that it does. Afterwards, see if it will merge for you.
