Cannot Log-on

Hi, i am hoping that someone can help me with a problem on my daughter's pc. From starting the pc, windows seems to boot up partially but does not get to the log-on screen and instead goes to a black screen and all you can see is the arrow shaped mouse pointer and thats all.

I put the windows cd in to try to repair the installation and booted from that but still the same thing happens.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Were you in safe mode? If so you could not get out or what?

I could only click on the safe mode and then it said please wait and nothing happened for at least an hour other than a blank screen.

Hi andy

RichC has asked a few of us to help

Does your computer finish POST? (thats the first screen that says your computer model etc) If it does, during it try shift F10. That will put you into a "DOS" command window. Does that work?

If so can you
right click on the title bar of the cmd window? you want to elevate the cmd window to admin. (just right click and run as admin)

are you there? If so
type sfc /scannow

that will verify and repair your system files. at the end it will give you a report.

We need that.

Use the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search) to take a screen shot, and the attachment icon (shaped like a paper clip) to upload it

see Pics

If you need help Pm rich of me for we both float between vista and win 7

Hi, i am afraid i cannot perform the task you are requesting.

From power up, this is what happens.

1.The Dell splash screen appears and i have options to enter the bios( which i can do if i need to)

2. The windows splash screen then appears(green lines moving from left to right)

3. Then i get text instructions to either startup repair or start windows normally.

If i choose start up repair, the screen goes black and nothing happens after waiting around an hour. If i choose start windows normally, it will eventually return to the start up repair/start windows normally option.

Hope this helps to diagnose the problem.

Andy
