Solved Can't click on internet sites

Hi guys

Not hugely computer literate but hopefully can get some help from here.

I have a HP Touchsmart PC, running Vista x64 and using Internet Explorer 8. Recently we had a malware virus which was sucessfully removed by the computer technician. Everything is back to normal and when we run a virus scan it is now all clean. However, when we are on the internet the mouse now can't click with the left button
on websites and we can't use the left button to click to navigate around the site. The only temporary way I have found (which is very difficult and limiting) is to right click on the site and scroll up to "Open" or click on the site with the left button and hit "enter" which sometimes works.

I have replaced the mouse and ensured all the mouse setting are correct. This problem doesn't happen in emails only on Internet Explorer.

Hopefully someone can help. WOuld be extremely grateful for any suggestions or insight on how to fix this frustrating problem.

Thanks so much.
Karrie

You said that you checked the mouse settings. Did you go to control panel. Click on mouse and make sure that button configuration is not checked? Please, understand since I cannot actually see your computer we, both, must be sure that we are talking about the same thing.

Did some thinking and now I have additional thoughts. If you have everything set up correctly, this symptom is one remanat of the virus, damage was done that was not corrected.

Several suggestions.
In search type turn off windows features. Go to windows features and turn off IE. (you cannot browse until turned on again). Turn off compter an boot. See if it works

If does not work, Make sure that the virus is gone.
You can use this free scan to be sure the virus is gone.

Finally, I think that this will work. Download another browser. Chrome is a big favorite around here, but I perfer FireFox.

Hi Richard

Thanks for your reply. Have definitely checked all the mouse configurations from the control panel and they are all correct. Seems to work everywhere else ok apart from the internet. I think you are right that it is damage done from the virus and not fixed.

Now sorry to sound really dumb but where exactly do I go to "turn off windows feature" and "turn of IE" so I can try that.

I have done a full scan on the computer three more times since the virus was originally found and deleted and it is all clear so hoping it has definitely gone.

Thanks so much for helping.

You are not dumb

Ask a question feel like a fool for 5 minutes. Dont ask a question feel like a fool for a life time. In addition, you had enough smarts to come to the best Vista help around.

But, I digress.

Type in search, by the start button, turn off windows....you will see turn windows features on and off...click that....you will get a box that shows a lot of check marks. Got to iE explorer and uncheck. It is 5 or 6 from the top.

I had one poster who told me he or she got scared because they could not go on the internet. No more internet until you check that box again.

One of these suggestions will work. It is not the physical mouse, it is the software and the virus (which may not be totally gone) Take that scan that I gave you.

On more thing. Before doing anything make a system restore point so we can correct any mistakes that are made.

Hey there

When I type in search "turn off windows" it only comes up with some of my word files. Same when I type in "turn off window features". Is there any other way to access this option?

Thanks
Karrie :-)

Download this on your computer and run scan. From now on you can use it once a week or so. It is highly recommended. It can be run with your current antivirus.

You may even want to try it now. Just to be triple sure.

Hi there

Sorry about the delay but ran the Malware and it picked up 2 threats so have done a full scan and all is good now.

Did uncheck the enable access to internet explorer and rebooted. Then allowed access again and still can't click on internet sites. I can click on anything else on my pc (email etc) and even select my favourites on the internet page but as soon as I try to click on a particular web page or site it won't let me and I have to right click and then select open.

Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help to date. Obviously that malwares was the best to actually find their was still a virus there.

Thanks Karrie :-)

Me again. Also, how would I change from Internet Explorer to Firefox? Does it cost and would I lose all my websites saved in favourites etc? Thanks!

My Computer

Hi me,

Here is a link for FF. Its free. You would not lose anything. You are just going to switch your default browser to FF and try it. If you do not like it we can uninstall it.

Firefox Browser | Faster & Safer Internet | Free Download Make sure you get the right one for your OS.

REMEMBER before trying anything make a restore point, for double protection.

Go to device manager and make sure that your drivers for the mouse are ok.

Type device manager in search and they go to mouse and look for yellow markers showing that there is a problem.

Everyone here swears by Malawrebytes. It really is good. I just forgot to mention it at first.

Hey there

I am running Firefox and all seem to be ok. However, I am trying to do an email signature in Microsoft Outlook 2003. When I try to advance edit, it is saying "Could not find an editor for H (.) files. This happened when we first loaded Outlook and we had to change the program association with HTML to word. I have done this as it was set to firefox but still not getting any joy getting to used the advanced edit - same message is still coming up.

Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Hi me,

You know that if I were familiar with Outlook, I would give you all the help that I could, but unfortunately I do not have sufficient expertise to be of any help.

I can give you a suggestion, though. We have a group of wonderful and helpful people at this forum, who want to help. You would make it easier for them, if you posted in a new thread with an appropriate subject. In that way those who are familiar with Outlook will stop by with their advice. Weekends are usually slow, so do not get discouraged, if not many members stop by today. Bye me.

Richard

1st - Run a System Restore (to a time when it was working). Go to Start...Search and type "System Restore". This is the easiest thing to do as you wont loose data and wont have to do anything except wait for 5 or 10 mins.

NB: Make sure you out all USB sticks and other potenital virus threats.

If this works, and IE is OK, then put in your memory stick one at a time and check nothing odd happens.

Any scans can take ages to do and would be longer than restore, but some people don't have the options.
