Solved Can't download anything

Hi,

On a seldom used computer, I have discovered I can no longer download anything. When I save to desktop, it completes 100%, but it is not there. If I download to my user folder-same thing-not there. The only thing I ever downloaded was a Canon program in 2009. However, window updates have been successful since. Even though I no longer has phone support, a Dell tech took control of my computer and tried the (easy fixes) but was unsuccessful. Ultimately they wanted $200 for 1 year of software fixes or a onetime $89. Since I paid $300 4 years ago for the computer, it makes no sense to pay for this problem-especially since everything else works OK. I have turned off the Firewalls, logged in under every possible name, etc, but nothing works. It downloads and then the file vanishes. I only have IE7 on this computer, so can't use or download Firefox. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, how far have you got with the Microsoft updates, also, are you running any anti virus program ? How bout antimalware or an anti spyware, All in one Microsoft Security Essentials has all that , but, you probably can not download it, you may have to use another computer to put on a Flash Drive or dvd/cd . Tell us how you are set up for installing programs this way ?

If the antivirus check comes out negative there is no need to spend any money. If you do not have a reinstall DVD, you can do a factory restoration, by using a particular key combination, which we can help you find with the make and model of your computer.

I have E Acceleration. I have run scans and tried the downloads with it disabled.
This is a Dell Inspiron 530 s

And the scans were clean.

The Dell tech had me go somewhere where it showed it had Window updates as late as December of last year.

Web of Trust is red on that E Accelleration site , known as WOT , which is a rating by users of that program, How did you get hooked up with that for an anti virus ? Anyways, if you trust it, then I guess Rich will just go ahead and tell you how to get to Default Factory OS conditions.

I have had it (E-Accel)for years) it does an auto scan everyday. The few times I got a virus over the years they helped me fix it. Besides a clean scan, I have not had any other problems or signs of a virus.

If I were you, I would use Free of Malwarebytes Antimalware, but, you would need to get it on a Flash drive on a good computer , or a DVD .

I should clarify that the above applies to my other Dell computer that I use heavily. The Dell Inspiron in question has been used sparingly and never had a virus.

It is not really that hard to do, just go to your Start button, open up and select all programs, then open up accessories, and right click Command Prompt, okay that if UAC asks you to , then in the window you see , type in sfc /scannow and press Enter. That is really all there is to that .

I did the scan..went to 100% verification and then it went to the prompt again. Does that mean everything is ok?

Again, this is not as hard as you may think, open up the Command prompt again, and put this in that box : findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt then press enter, Now go to your desktop and open the file that was placed there and look at the bottom of that text, what did not get repaired ? It very well may have not found any violations. Post results for us please.

Found the file on my desktop..opened it and it had nothing in it.

Sometimes you have to do this : Go to the Start button, left click it, you should see a search pane right above it, type this in that pane : sfcdetails.txt then see if it shows you a text file found, open that one up and see what it has found .

I did so and it brings up exactly what was on my desktop.. a notepad that has nothing in it.
