CD/DVD drive problems

I posted this a couple of months back:
"Hi! I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 and my DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. I tried it with various CDs and DVDs and it never detects anything. So I went to the Device Manager and this is what it says:
TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA cannot start (Code 10)."

But while the solution kind of worked, it's still not playing the DVDs everytime. First, it doesn't always eject the disc. The only way I can ALWAYS get it out is during restart, or using a paperclip. Second, even if I take the disc out, the computer still tells me it's there (it displays the disc name too...). And worst of all, if the disc is in, it displays the disc name and I click on it, it doesn't load anything most of the time. Unless I restart it, take the disc out at that time and then put it in (and that's not guaranteed to work either).

Maybe not a solution but you can try cleaning your drive. It may just be dirty. Update your drivers or try disabling it and then enabling it. You can generate a system health report and see if that gives you any other info. Go to start menu-control panel-performance information and tools-advanced tools- generate a system health report. Maybe one of these options will help.

Thanks for your reply, Airbot. I tried cleaning it, that makes no difference (besides the laptop is rather new, I don't think it SHOULD be dirty). The drivers say they're all updated and disabling/enabling makes no difference.

I generated the report, and it seems okay (it found some error with Microsoft 6to4 adapter but that doesn't relate to drives).

It may just be a damaged drive. It's possible something disconnected inside the computer.Do you have a warranty on it? Maybe this link will help. Or course you should research it more if this is not your specific unit. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Nawh, that link doesn't help

I only have manufacturer's warranty and before I decide to send it away I'd really like to try to do something myself (I need the laptop for school). Is there something I could check inside the laptop myself? I'm an engineering student (so I should be technologically inclined I guess).. Or is it something I should get the tech people at university to take a look at?

Hi there Melawrghk, yes I would definitely have someone take a look at the actual drive. Could be malfunctioning.

Hmm - did you check the Registry for errant drive filters being in place?

Hi Melawrghk, I have encountered a few of the similar problems .

The problem seems to be the result of playing different VCDs for two and nothing for one.

To fix it, I clean install os for two and the problem came back when play the same VCDs again. The other one can't fix with reinstallation. Finally the two were completely fixed with firmware update. It took me 8 months apart to locate the two appropreate firmware. You really have to look hard plus a little luck to find it. For the other one, I replace it with a new one. So...

johngalt, thanks. I checked that before and that's what "fixed" the problem initially. But the Upper/Lower filters aren't there any more and the problem persists.

I'll take it to tech people tomorrow. Thanks for the help everyone! I'll let you know what happens.

It could be a generic driver that is not working, or else a conflicting driver for something else, or a corrupted Windows install....

I am usually loathe to suggest this, but have you tried Windows System File Checker? See http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html for a tutorial on how to go about doing this....

Be warned, though, if you have done things like patched your styles / uxtheme.dll, this will revert them.
