chkdsk question

Hi all. I have a brand new asus gs50 laptop with vista 64 home premium. Anyway, i have never been able to run dskchk since i bought it a few days ago. When i use command prompt to try chkdsk i get this result: The volume bitmap is incorrect. Windows found problems with the file system. It then says to run chkdsk /f, which i did, but no change. I read alot of threads on chkdsk but havent seen anyone post about the bitmap thing. Also when i bought this i set a few things to manual and disabled a few windows media services. Cant remember exactly which i set to manual. If any of these could cause it, can u point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Take a picture of the services that are running now and save the pictures ,you may need 4 or 5 pictures depending ,anyway, then go to MSConfig and go to services and [enable all] and see if you can do the chkdsk ,if it works you can start turning the services off again ,there are lots of places on the web that will give you a list of services that will work on your personal computer, and you will still have the pictures of your original services to change them back to,I hope this makes sense and it helps you, ,let me know,

Hey JFar, two things for you.
1) You are a bit difficult to read. Use proper punctuation, and format. (Just a recommendation to help us all out) And done use things like u in place of you...
2) Enabling start up things in MSConfig is not going to change anything here.

I do agree, post some screenshots if you can. Also, try running some things like SeaTools or Data Advisor to see if the HDD is bad.

Hi,

Did it say something like this :

"free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap"

That is part of the Ntfs filesystem , and can sometimes be affected by unexpected shutdown - running chkdsk /f will usually fix it.

Not clear from your post if Chkdisk actually ran , or what it reported.

As it's a new machine , best to take it back as it could be a hard drive issue.

Hope it helps

2) I was only trying to help the chap with things that worked for me ,and yes I did turn on all the services and it fixed the problem that I was having ,which was the same problem as loosenut so ,( I do not need an English punctuation lesson from you on this forum, so just answer the problems about the computers and everyone will be a lot better off)

Yes it was. And I am not trying to insult you or anything, just trying to help you and everyone else. It is very difficult to read something that is all jumbled up. No offense, especially if English is not your first language.

Second, I am just stating my opinion. No one has to listen...

Thanks for the replies. I'm not great with computers, so bare with me. How do i get screenshots of my services?
You can press the Print Screen button on your keyboard, or use Vista Snip Tool (hit start and search for snip tool)

Ok guys, heres the news. I took it back to best buy and the geek squad guy there tried to fix it. He couldn't do it. So back home I went with a brand new replacement. This time chkdsk works normally. Thanks for the help anyways.

Hi loosenut,

Great - often best to take it back if it's new.

I really do not know a lot about computers, but I have recently purchased an HP desktop with Vista 64 Home loaded on it. After bringing everything over to it from an XP Laptop, I ran Disk Clean up and Disk Defragmentor. Then I went to use the HP utility that would back up files. When I did that it told me I had errors on my disk. I closed the program and forgot about doing it for a while. Then I needed to reboot during a software install. When I did that, I got a doss like screen that I believe was chk/dsk (I think it mentioned it somewhere on the screen). One time it ran through that with no other messages. The next time I needed to reboot I got the same black screen, but this time it froze and stayed that way for a few hours. I finally turned it off, then on, and by-passed the black screen when I got the 10 second message. Windows ran fine.

The other thing I noticed was that if I went to the Help & Search files, there where no pictures loading.

I brought it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy where I had purchased it. They have it now and are running their diagnostics on it. Their first guess was a bad hard drive. As far as the Help issue, they said would need to reinstall the OS and would loose all my information.

I found you while trying to do some research. I've already heard that it could be a problem with Vista 64 indexing. I don't really know what that means, but Before I tell them to change anything, I wanted to know if I could see if anyone has any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Hello BizzyBee (you live in Bisbee by any chance? Just a guess)

If indexing is causing you a problem you can disable it in Vista. Here is the tutorial to do so. Hope that helps you out!

Thank you so much for your reply. While I was doing my research, the Geeks at Best Buy were running diagnostics and it seems like they found a problem with either the mother board, or the hard drive.....they didn't really know. Long story short, my new computer with all my data is fried. They reinstalled the hard drive that they had removed for some reason, and it wouldn't boot up......so I have to pay them so they can do it on their special machines. They are such nice guys.

I told them beforehand that I was finding a lot of information online about Vista 64 and some issues with indexing, but I'm not really educated in electronics, I just know what I've picked up over the years....more than some, less than some. Now I and wait two weeks for HP to fix 'r' up!

Actually I'm in Scottsdale. Bisbee is beautiful, but I prefer the desert. It snows in Bisbee!

My Computer

Just wondering. I always though Bisbee was too Artsy for me. I live in Phoenix...

Anyways, don't bother having them do it, as you will pay $200 for a $50 job. Or more. (They charge like $150 to set up a computer that takes 10 mins.... losers. And they didn't even have a clue my computer was screwed up, and I just fixed it myself...)
Best choice here is to have it replaced if it is still under warranty.
