Looking at his core speed on the images in the first pages posted. Is the core speed correct? Normally CPUID will show my core speed at 2.5GHz. What is the 1600Mhz core speed it is showing? Is it me or is the computers power for the core cut in half?

Ok, I was not sure how the cores were displayed. But look at this core. It is the same as yours. Display is different:

intel_core2duo_e7200.jpg

Note: 2.53GHz and core speed is 2539 Mhz. Yours shows at 1600Mhz. As far as I can tell, your core is working at 1/2 speed.

Ahh...I just found out that the core speed is shown as the current running speed of the core. I just don't know why it doesn't show the max speed as i've tried this on my other computer too...lol..

Well avgwarhawk, how did you manage to put up the whole picture on the post?

When I get a display on my computers (2) it shows the core running at the advertised speed. It has always showed the core speed. My AMD Phenoms always show 2530.3MHz. My Athon 3200 single core always shows 2145.2Mhz. When the BIOS cut the core speed I would have to go into the BIOS and make a change to get the core up to the speed as advertised. I could see change using CPUID. The BIOS would revert back to fail safe speeds designed by the mobo manufacture when I would pull the battery off the mobo. Just a thought.

Intel processors use speedstep which when the computer is idle it reduces the multiplier used so your fsb x lowest multiplier is

267 x 6 = 1600

When your pc is in use it then raises the multiplier so if your just opening a folder it could use a 7 multiplier which is

267 x 7 = 1869

If your using a cpu heavy app like a game it will use the x 9.5 multiplier which gives you

267 x 9.5 = 2536

Its like this to reduce heat, save power etc.

Oh...coming back to the solution, my friend too faces this problem is it just that we both have the same processors or the same graphic cards? Or is it the case of the fan?

You and your friend should post screenshots of HWmonitor just so we can rule out the temps and voltages.

Then if its not them do my little list and that will rule out ram and HDD errors, plus it will update all your drivers etc.

Ah, good find!

What do you mean?

Good find on what you found on the CPU about idle and the multiplyer being reduced. Personally I still think your CPU is running half speed. Every image I see of your CPU using CPUID shows it running at advertised speed. None of these images were taken when the CPU was under a load. Also, Intel cut the L2 cache by 50% on this CPU.

For the processor to always be at full speed you simply go into the bios and disable speedstep and C1E. I did that the first day i built my pc 2 years ago but "The Cool Guy" cant change bios settings due to his motherboard.

Cool Guy you'll just have to live with it or buy a new motherboard (Not Intel lol)

Ok thats good you did the list and i take it there was no errors. Il take a look at the screenshots when you post them.

avgwarhawk what do you mean they cut the L2 cache. If you go this link http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ParentRadio=All&ProcFam=2558&SearchKey= you'll see he has 3mb. Only the e6000 series had more at the time it was released

Bummer on the mobo, this chip is capable of so much more. As far as the cache, it is capable of 6mb if I remember the articles I just read on this CPU.

Here is my other beef that the CPU is not running to full potential. Look at the CPUID post of the reading I posted, the multiplier shows 6 (6-9). 6-9 being the steps. Cool guys does not have this. I'm suspecting he is stuck at 6 for the mutiplier and one of those failsafe mobo BIOS. Emachine was famous for the reduced performanced locked down BIOS.

At any rate, you want my take on this freezing? I think the graphics card is the issue, period. If it is not an 8800 or better, full graphics are hard to come by when gaming. Heck, even the 8800 had it's issues. I would seriously look into a 9000 series card.
