oh ok i thought they meant the same. (what is difference? is one bootable non bootable etc)

so example. my pc has 160GB split 2 partitions
C:windows 67.5GB D:data 67.5GB

my external drive is 500GB

is that ok? does it need to be partitioned? or formatted? ntfs ? fat32?

thanks

Fat 32 is XP

Lets start over. The size of the external drive is not important.
The drive that the OS is on is lets say 500GB
The new Drive that you send the image to must be at least 500GB
The external drive that you use to store the image is not important.

Specifics
OS drive 67 GB. you want to send image to a new Hard Drive. If\t must be 67 GB or more. The exteral hard drive size is not important. As long as there is enough room for the image.

sorry i meant whats difference with macrium between using image or clone (would one allow me to boot from it on the external drive in the event of driver failure etc)

Lets start over. The size of the external drive is not important.
The drive that the OS is on is lets say 500GB
The new Drive that you send the image to must be at least 500GB
The external drive that you use to store the image is not important

ok so as myC: os drive is 67.5GB and D:data is 67.5GB my 500gb drive is more than capable of housing the the 2 67.5GB partitions (total 135GB) is that right?

ok so it images the whole partition including un-used space for instance :
67.5GB C: OS partition takes up (20GB-25GB) leaving (42.5GB-47.5GB) or does it just image the used space ?

thanks

I have always used image and it works like a charm, it boots without problem.

No problem with the hard drive size. It will image just the used space.
Read the tutorial that I gave you. You will actually be asked what you want imaged.
I image just my OS, drive.

ok cool no need to worry bout cloning then. just wondered if 1 was better (quicker to make / smaller file size) than the other or if 1 was bootable d the other not.

so if i had an image (of my current os updates n all) on external hdd

and the internal hdd failed broke etc. i could fit a new internal hdd and transfer the image and boot from it (or no?)

i watched the video but was still unclear on that side. (never done any backing up before let alone imaging cloning etc so this is new teritory for me) thanks for helping.

ok so justthe 20Gb - 25Gb that the os occupies will be imaged ok. thanks

i will most likely do same just image os with it so as not to have to go through the install all over again. (the install only actually took an hour or so it was all the updates after that took the most time)

thanks again

After you transfer the image to the new hard drive, it does everything that you were able to do before.
May I suggest, before you begin to put your programs on your computer etc, give macrium a try. You can always reinstall if you screw up.

sorry to repeat so to clarify if i have made an image of my current system as is now and store it on external then tomorrow my internal hdd suffered say mechanical failiure i could install a new internal hdd with no OS connnect my external drive with the image on it transfer the image to the new internal drive and would be as if nothing had happened (is that about right or have i missenterperated?)

thats what i was planning to do.. do an image of the new install with all updates drivers working etc before putting my data programs etc on it so in the event of a prob i may loose some personal data but at least i would have an image of my os to get me out of trouble and back up and running quicker than complete re-install

Try with a USB drive and then test it. Dont worry, if you test it, you do not have to go as far as the actual image. You just need to test to see if you can get to the images.
Turn the computer off and boot from the drive to test.

What I meant is turn off the computer, put the USB drive in the computer, turn on the computer and make sure you know how to boot from the USB. As the computer is booting, it will look different. When booted you should see all the images that are available to use. The images are probably on your external hard drive.

sorry im more lost now than before? when you say usb do you mean my external hdd or usb thumb drive. and i have not got as far as creating any images yet. or the macrium recovery cd

when you say make sure i know how to boot from usb "do you mean change the boot order?"

"the computer will look different" (different how?)

when you say all the images available. do you mean the ones i create "when created" or will one of the images be my os stored on the internal drive?"

thanks
