Nehalem is without a doubt the talk of the town, not the least thanks to Intel's recent presentations at IDF.
We haven't seen any real full performance tests though, not even overclocking tests have been available, which is far from odd though since no one but Intel and its closest partners have Nehalem systems at their disposal.
During the Advanced Overclocking Championship in Berlin, ASUS had brought its coming Intel X58 motherboard, ASUS P6T Deluxe, and Intel's Nehalem processor, also known as Core i7.

The information we got applied only to ASUS own P6T Deluxe motherboard, none of the performance tests or the the information was directly related to the processor.
Now, a few days later we've managed to dig up some exclusive information on Core i7 and its overclocking potential.


Our source installed a Core i7 processor in ASUS P6T Deluxe and threw liquid nitrogen at it, and the first tests have shown that the processor can handle temperatures as low as -120°C with ease. No coldbugs have been experienced, but we should say that it haven't tried lower than -120°C so far.
Something that may very well happen within the near future.


This bodes well for the extreme overclockers that are sitting around waiting for the Nehalem architecture and even if we have no detailed performance data or even clock frequencies to share, Intel's new architecture is not far behind Yorkfield in regards to overclocked frequencies. That's as much as we could get for now, but we will keep digging!

Well if there is a dual socket server offering and I could get it to run quietly, then that is what I plan.

well here we have a Core i7 dual-socket, six-channel DDR3 Tylersburg DP Gainestown-based board from Intel, a server variant with six DDR3-1333 DIMM sockets per CPU (12 total)

As you can see from the photo, the board had only one CPU installed, with a "quickie fix" fan put on top of a large aluminum heatsink - and the fan was cool to the touch while the demo was running, even when putting task loads on. The Tylersburg IOH North Bridge had a fan on top too.

What's interesting here is that the single 8GB MetaRAM Hynix DDR3 DIMM on display is just the start.

Up to 16GB DDR3-1333 modules can be created, allowing up to 96GB RAM per CPU, or 192GB per dual-CPU board.

If you go for slower DDR3-1066 and boards with three DIMMs per channel,- nine DIMMs per CPU - we have 144GB per CPU, or 288GB memory per mobo!
However, the supposed up to 6ns - 8 DDR3-1333 CAS cycles - MetaRAM chip latency penalty could be a bit of a drawback for jobs with lots of short memory accesses.

However, for in-memory databases or large scientific models, the amount of RAM is far more important than its bandwidth or latency.

Not to mention that, with improved large-page TLBs, Nehalems should handle big memory tasks better.
On the other hand, the registered DDR3 server memory will be available in up to 8GB capacity, with somewhat lesser latency penalty.

So, for Gainestown dual Nehalem workstations and servers, if happy with up to 2GB per-DIMM capacity (24 GB RAM total), stick with fast unbuffered - ECC or not - standard modules.

If you need more, i.e. 48 to 96GB total RAM, the registered DDR3 should do the job.

And, if in need of ultra-large memory footprint and 192GB or RAM on your desktop from late 2008, then MetaRAM seems to be the only answer.

I have not done any research yet, but I was thinking 2x8core 16gb ram but I need at least 2 pcie slots for my 4 monitors.

Hopefully with that spec I should have no trouble doing my main activities of surfing the net and editing php files in notepad+

This will most likely lower the prices of C2s, as I know I won't be able to afford a Nehalem when it's out.

That motherboard too is the most beautiful motherboard I've seen.

The new Tylersburg 5500 & 3500 series ''Server boards'' are due to start rolling out in Q1 of 2009. Pricing is yet to be determined.
At the same time Intel will be discontinuing many other consumer and enterprise products throughout 2009 as well.

I'm thinkin if i do switch over.. it wont be for at LEAST 6 months to a year or more. I want second Gen Nehalem.. I'm still not completely sold on the Nehalem just yet. I think it will be good. but not to amazing. Not to mention that overclocking wont be nearly the same. or as good. Intel is trying to rid the overclocking thing.. there boards will not offer overclocking options I heard. but could be rumor.. take with a grain of salt. but I love my OC'n.. so that needs to be something I can do

Well as you can only use DDR3 with it, looks like I won't be upgrading for over a year yet as I've promised myself to not spend any money on my PC now (that won't last long )
