hi
i want to replace the stock cooler on my amd quad core cpu but every one i keep looking at means me taking the mother board out to put a plate under the board

i would like one where i take mine of and put another one straight on but keep the orignal clip design on the board any ideas

If AM2 coolers are compatible with AM2+ socket (think they are), then look at Zalman 9500 or 9700 coolers (9700 would be better for a quad core Phenom). They just use the retention clip design without having to put a backing plate on.

I used the 9500 cooler on my Athlon x2 and it kept it nice and cool, and using the 9700 on my E8200 atm, and it's running great.

I have to say, the best thing about AM2 sockets is the very easy installation of coolers on it.

Yea that's the exact same one I use as well, and I love it (goes well with my Nvidia case as well ).

It can get a bit noisy at full speed, but I set the minimum speed at 50% in BIOS, and at that speed, it's more or less silent. It will come with the mounting brackets for LGA775 as well as the retention clip you want.

are you able to turn the plastic retainer that holds the cooler on the am2 socket as ive just noticed if i fit this cooler the fanwill be facing either up or down and not facing the fan to the rear to get the heat out of the case

No I don't think you'd be able to because of the shape of the bracket.

When I had mine on AM2, I had it blowing in to the PSU, and it got blown out the back of there. As it never got that hot, it caused no problems, and is better than having it blowing on to the graphic card.

I had the fan facing the graphic card, so the air blows through the cooler.

forgot to ask what sort of temp's was you geting with the standered cooler and then what was you geting with the new one

The zalman one is great, its a B*****d to clean when it gets dusty tho!

The zalman is all zinc coated copper & has a mirror base & comes with real good thermal compound thats easy to apply.

The triton might be a better choice as it has about 3000cm2 more surface area, double the amount of heatpipes & a full 10mm bigger fan.

Overall the triton will probably see 7-10% lower temps at least than the zalman, also the zalman seems to go up to 3000rpm for no reason, causing a lot of noise, unless you have a fan controller.

The asus probably uses the push pin design so you might not have to remove ur board. Just make sure your case is big enough

I had overclocked my Athlon x2 and with the stock cooler, I was getting around 40C idle and above 50C sometimes at load.

With the 9500, I was getting just under 30C idle and near 40C at load. The 9700 should be better though as it's bigger than the 9500.

asus one is out of the questions as it is 2 tall

quick question a 110mm fan doing 2800 rpm will be a lot quiter than a 80mm fan doing 4500rpm as that is what my cooler is doing at the moment

also how much will the zalman 9700nt drop the temp ???

The 110m will be quieter. I dunno how much it will drop your temp by as I've not tested it myself against a stock cooler.

It will drop your temperature, though, no doubt about it.

to give you an idea at idle it is about 42c at full load it is runing about 58/59c but no more than that if i could lower the full load temp to about 50c i would be happy

The question that should be asked is what are your plans for the CPU cooler... are you looking just for better cooling, reduced noise, or do you want to overclock the hell out of the CPU?

If you're simply looking for better cooling, or just mild overclocking without upping voltages than pretty much any aftermarket cooler will work well. It's more about reducing the noise and price than cooling.

If overclocking is your goal then you need to look at coolers like the T.R.U.E., CoolerMaster V8 and such. I've never used the TRUE, but I was a beta tester for the CM V8 and can vouch it works well and at full speed is very quiet while it cooled better than the Zalman I have. But if you're just looking for something that's quiet, or a little better cooling then both of those coolers are overkill.

iam looking for both i have over clocked the cpu before from 2.6 to 3.2 and the temp went up by 3/4c i think the zalman should do the job for me and doing the mesurments in side the case it will fit
