Crackling sound

I have one game in which I get crackling sound its Sword of the Stars and the expansion Born of Blood.

Only problem is I have absolutely no idea what sound I have I used to have realtek, but now all I can see on my system is this.

I don't want to get the latest realtek if it is not what I have, anyone know what mine might be, I realise it will be hard but I have no other idea of where else to look, to be more helpful. It just says High Definition Audio Device

It is, or at least according to what is available from Abit it is,

Universal abit > Motherboard, Digital Speakers, iDome, AirPace, Multimedia

Seeing as what they have is the R1.90 and the latest is R2.10, I would go with the latest,

unless some of the other Realtek users have a better recommendation that the current driver.

If it's only happening in one game, it may be the games sound settings itself.

I downloaded that SIW jobby and it is very informative, but on looking at the Sound section I cannot see anything that says Realtek

I am lost

Here is what the SIW reports, although I may be looking in the wrong place, typical

I am starting to think that maybe the sound is meant to crackle, it would help if anyone else with this game could let me know if its the same only I say this because it seems to do the crackling when the ships move, the engines fire up and maybe its done for effect.....I don't know........I don't want to go altering anything as my other games are all fine and I have never updated my onboard sound......as the saying goes "If it aint broke don't fix it" lol

That and the previous screen shot are not showing anything at all regarding the onboard audio. In fact the three INF's showing in the second (hdaduio.inf, ks.inf and wdmaudio.inf) are all Microsoft files realting to the Microsoft UAA HD driver, and only used if your device supports it.

That being said have a look in Device Manager and see if there is anything audio or multimedia related that is showing with the yellow triangle/exclamation mark, as SIW isn't showing anything like that. If there is then you will need to re-install the Realtek drivers. If there isn't have a quick look in the bios and make sure that the onboard audio is still enabled.

Ok I checked the Device Manager and no yellow exclamation marks or triangles, and whats worrying me even more is that there is no mention of Onboard Sound either in the Bios that is

But the weird thing that I just can't get my head round is that I have perfect sound in everything apart from that one game that has that crackling

If your hearing sound, don't have a sound card physically installed, then your onboard is not disabled

The links that Stormy provided are the correct ones for your board. here's another quick link to the 2.10 drivers:

The fact that it's only one game pretty much narrows down the cause the to S.o.t.s itself.

In the games audio options screen, have you set it to:

Stereo

44khz

16bit

Hardware : no

try adjusting the frequency and bit depth to see if has any impact.

I really hate any sound trouble as its a major thing for me to have just right, and when things play up, its a nightmare for me to sort out, but I'lll grab the update and then check my settings

Don't know if you look there or not but according to the manual (and what a fun time it was finding that) the setting for the onboard audio is under the,

Integrated Peripherals -> On-Chip PCI Device

section and listed as "On-Chip Audio Controller" with the default setting being Auto; doesn't say in the manual whether there is also Enabled or Disabled, but if you find it and it is set to Auto set it to Enabled if you can.

I'm ebarrassed to say this but that all goes over my head I know I'm thick but which manual? do you mean there is one in that download? or somewhere else

I'll go look around for it in the meantime, and check

I am also unsure what setting is best for me as I found a dropdown list of loads of things such as:

Padded Cell (in which I should be) and many others

Should have gotten one with the motherboard. If you didn't get one (or have lost it) don't try getting it from Abit as it appears they are cleaning out their FTP server in anticipation of shutting down next year (tip for anyone looking at buying any abit products in the near future, don't). Well that is a blow to hear that about Abit........so I suppose that my Motherboard will not get anymore updates once they pack up, great!!! I can't afford to get a new one of something else, so if this thing blows I've had it

Well that option in the Bios was set to Auto but I have switched it to Enabled now

Oh well looks like I will have to hope that this Mobo can hold out for a couple more years at least, and I doubt that, as it was installed in July 07

OK that says everything is installed and working correctly. Non-present devices won't show until you expand the category that they are listed under. I posted this in another thread recently,

In my case all the grayed out devices are a couple of mp3 players and a USB hub that weren't connected at the time. reason there is so many of them is I have a tendency to forget which USB port I used the last time, and Windows goes and installs the driver for it again, hence the multiple devices.

Anyway in your case what shows under "Sound, video and game controllers" when you expand it?
