Desktop Freezes and I must restart the computer

I have a custom built computer that is running on Vista Business 64 bit and has been crashing on me too many times. What happens is that everything locks up on the computer, I can't even move my mouse and if I try to turn lets say caps lock on for the keyboard it wouldn't turn on.

When I checked my Event Viewer it says 2 Errors:

EventLog EventID 6008 - The previous system shutdown at .... on ...... was unexpected.

and

HttpEvent EventID 15016 - Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.


I can't figure out what is going wrong. My specs are:

Intel Q6600 2.40 quad core
8GB RAM
500GB hard drive
9600GT 1GB Video Card
750W power supply

Hi elbasha,

There are many suggestions I can give you, they may help and they may not but you can run through them to give it a try. It may be some drivers or software you have installed that were corrupted or incompatible. Check your Device Manager and see if you have any problems. Try removing some of your memory and see what happens. Run system file checker and checkdisk. Generate a system health report to see if you get any other info. Run a malware scan, it may just be some malware. If none of that helps, try repairing from your repair option on your installation disk.Those errors that you posted really have nothing to do with your system freezing.

Hi elbasha, welcome to the board.

On top of what is suggested. You may try to repair or restore system to the earlier state at the date before problem occurred, or even a clean install. Try to do it in safe mode if unable to work in window. How about first, check and make sure the SATA connection is secure by shake, wiggle and tug on the connector at the HDD. yes, I'm serious. If you are not using after market SATA cable, replace it at once.

Hey all,
Thanks for the replies. This is where I notice it has been crashing on me at...

I had a game open one time and I tried to put everything on max quality to see how it looks like (this was 2 days ago when I finished building the computer). As soon as I changed it then the computer crashed. I opened the game and as soon as it loads up, the computer crashes again. It did that on me until I reinstalled it and now it doesn't crash (it crashed once afterwards).

I was transferring stuff from my laptop to the PC, it seemed to crash on me when it starts copying the files, it did that around 4 times. I didn't have a problem earlier though for like 7 hours transferring stuff. Then suddenly 4 times it crashes every time.

Only one time it crashed while surfing the internet, it was loading a page and it froze.

If you had not downloaded sp1 then that was going to be a suggestion.
Check the services running on your computer.

4- Is the RAM running on the correct voltage as indicated on the RAM sticks?

By either physically looking at the sticker on the memory or by going to the manufacture's website and looking up the memory's spec.

Please be aware that I can not help you if you don't answer all the questions. The questions are asked so that we are able to give you the best possible answer(s).

What i'm trying to find out is, is the memory running at its recommended settings, and since you're running 8gig with all your memory slots filled, do you need to downclock? I also need to know if you did anything to the memory thru the BIOS.

If your are unfamiliar wth your BIOS setting then I would suggest you find a forum that deals with your particular motherboard as they are more capable of helping you with those settings.

Or...maybe someone else here can help with those questions. I myself am unfamiliar with Asus boards so I can't give any advice there.

Be aware though that those questions will still need to be answered.

I didn't touch anything with the BIOS, the brand for the memory is Patriot.

It has been a good 2-3 days without any crashes on me, not sure what is the case.

It just crashed now. This is the third time it crashes when searching for new updates using the windows update. Any idea?

a few more ideas:

1. Double and Triple check your system's cooling, especially the processor's cooler/fan. Might be blocked or malfunctioning. Overheating usually does exactly what you described. (You can enter the BIOS and watch the CPU temperature for a couple of minutes , see if it's rising fast. everything above 55-60 degrees C is bad and indicates cooling problems)

2. Download latest drivers for your graphics card. (less probable)

3. Manually set the memory clock on the bios to match your memories 5-5-5-12 or whatever clocking they have. (worst chances, still worth a try (you would get blue screens instead of freezing if that was the case))

Change your timings to 5-5-5-15. Run the system for awhile and see if that cures your problem.

FWIW - did you build the machine yourself? If so, you'll need to do a lot of tweaking to get things to work correctly - system building is not just about buying good components and slapping them together and getting a working system.

Sygnus is correct- we need *accurate* and *detailed* answers to troubleshoot what is going on. The fact that it is listed as a Kerberos issue is a bad thing - it really sounds like you should start over from scratch. Hate to have to say it, but something got hosed somewhere.

A couple of suggestions - find some forums that deal with the specific hardware you have and do some really detailed reading - for example, with my mobo, a 780i chipset based mobo, I am technically going to be looking forward to having issues when installing OSs with 4 GB of RAM installed - or when having all 4 RAM slots populated. I have 4 GB, in a 2 x 2 configuration, so only 2 slots are used - and I have not had issues with it yet. However, I did the reading and research *before* buying and slapping it all together.

Another thing is that you need to be *intimately* familiar with your BIOS - because you are your own tech support. There is no call Dell or HP when something doesn't work - you have to figure it out yourself.

I will look into changing the RAM to match the mobo. The computer has not been crashing on me at all except when I do 2 things it sometimes crashes:

1 - Search for updates using windows update
2 - Copy files from a network computer

Other than that the computer has not crashed.

Out of curiosity, have you scanned your machine for malware? In addition to your favorite antivirus (you *are* using anti virus, right) I'd suggest Malwarebytes.org
