Desktop freezing

I am experiencing a freeze on my desktop it happens intermittently when I double click on a short cut, I can start task manager but it shown nothing working i,e box is empty.
The small green circle just goes round and round, I can use everything else except the short cuts, if I reboot it is ok
DELL, inspiron 530, vista home, sp2. updates OK.

I did a system check with McAfee every thing clean, also system restore. will see how it goes over the next day or so, I try the simple stuff first. I have to
