Directx 10 Compliance

C

cogs06

I am currently operating XP Pro 32 bit and Directx 9. In a few days I will be installing from scratch Vista Home premium 64 bit.

What I am not sure of is whether my CPU is compliant with Directx 10.

It is an Intel Pentium D 915.

I have searched Intels site for hours to no avail.

Does anyone have an answer for me please?

For DirectX 10 to work you need a graphics card that is capable eg ATI HD 2000 series or above

Vista is capable of running DirectX 9 and 10 so you wont need to upgrade your graphics card unless you want to use DirectX 10

As stew states DX10 is GPU related, and has nothing to do with the CPU.
Vista supports DX9c for DX9 cards.

Pentium D is EM64T supported (64-bit)

I think it would be determined by why you are upgrading. I know Everquest is still using DirectX9c. While they have mentioned DirectX10 is in the works, their servers don't use it yet. So while my video card can use v10, I went with 9c to be compatible with the game I play online.

So if the things you use DirectX for are using v10, then upgrade, otherwise go with v9.

Thanks for that info. All I know is that DirectX is needed and that the newer the version of something is usually the better.

I was of the understanding that it was CPU related. (Now I know somethin')

My graphics card is an nVidea 7300GT, so will that run Directx 10? I am not only looking at now but what may be the requirements down the track especially when Windows 7 arrives.

I was avoiding Vista with all the negative publicity around and even looked at jumping ship to the "fruit company".

My son has Vista Home Premium on his new laptop and this totally turned me around. He has DirectX 10 only on it and has no problems at all.

Thanks in advance.

Your nvidia 7300GT wont do directX 10 but it does directX 9. My advice to you is install Vista with what you've got just now and see how it goes.

If you need more speed or want better graphics come back here and list your system specs and what budget you have for an upgrade and we will try to help you.

My PC's specs are as follows

MoBo Intel BLKDP965LTCK
CPU Intel Pentium D 915
RAM 3 Gb DDR2 667MHz
Graphics Card nVidea GeForce7300GT
HDD Seagate ST3320620AS (OS installed) & ST3500620AS
TV Tuner Realtek DTV 1000S

I am using my PC for recording TV shows as my two DVD recorders are analogue and my TVs are both digital.

If I need to replace my Graphics Card I am considering a GeForce 8500GT. I want to keep the cost as low as possible (<AU$100) andthe games my children play are all low spec.

The games you have just now should run on vista the same as the do on xp. But if you really want to upgrade your graphics card you'll need the assistance of someone australian as i have no idea how much a graphic card costs there.

If you want to post a link to an australian site you were thinking of buying from i can take a quick look or shout LOUD for an australian to help :)

Thanks to those who shared their knowledge and advice with me. I think I will go with running both DirectX 9 and 10 and upgrading my graphics card to the GeForce8600. This seems to be the ideal cost/performance one (no one talks kindly of the 8600GT).

My Vista Home Premium has arrived from the US and I have ordered the 64 bit media as all of my peripherals are compatible and I will be on my way to a whole new era of computing (and "Dad, how do you do this?").

This should suit all of needs for sometime to come.

Again I thank all.

9600GT or GS....... would be better, especially if you game ;)

& the P.D. is a great chip, i have a 925, while its an older architecture (Netburst), its a very rugged multitasking CPU, & will game well if coupled with a decent GPU...
