I have a new Dell XPS 730x running a clean install retail version of vista ultimate x64. I had 5 Disruptive Shutdowns on the first day of use and 2 on the second.

Is there any way of diagnossing what is causing them?

I have checked all the hardware and software with microsoft to make sure it's compatible with vista x64.

Look in the event viewer by typing eventvwr.msc into the start menu search then look under custom views administrative events.

There is a lot of information there, but I can't seem to find anything that metions why the system shut down. I was looking for 7 similar errors, since that is how may shut downs I have had.

I still have not been able to figure out why the system keeps shutting down. It seems like the last entry in the log pertains to the network card loosing connection. I have checked all the drivers, and everything is upto date. Called Dell again and they are of no help. THey said they would send me out a new computer in a few days. :(

Is the computer just shutting down suddenly, or is it "going through the motions" a though you issued the shutdown command.

If it is a sudden shutdown that happens without warning, then there are a number of possibilities that could be causing this:
  1. Heat. The CPU may very well be overheating, and is automatically shutting down to protect the computer.
  2. There is some other kind of hardware malfunction. Possibly power supply.
  3. You have some form of malware that is causing the shutdowns.
The first two options, because they can happen without warning, it is likely that the event viewer will not have time to record the event...

It's a disruptive shutdown. Screen goes black and computer shuts off.

I have run 2 different anti virus programs and neither found anything.

According to the temperature monitor that I have, the temps in the case are in hte high 80 degree F.

Have you tried a different power supply, or will opening the case maybe void your warranty? (Which may very well happen with Dell)

I had one of the Dell reps from the Dell XPS forum call and email me yesterday. They thought it may be the screws holding the liquid cooling system were not tight enough, but that was not the case. I have not tried a new power supply yet, but am waiting for them to send me a whole new system. I was able to open the case with out voiding the warranty.
