Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Does this crash only happen when you right-click? If so, then the likely culprit would be a bad Explorer Extension, which you'll need to uninstall in order to resolve this problem.

The trick finding out which one.

Which programs did you install prior to this error?

My Error in treminology, not Vista bombing but Windows Explorer crashing and restarting.

As for when, it has been doing it all night and I am not even right clicking on files! Windows Explorer has been crashing and restarting EVERY time tonight when I press the Start Button and click on Word 2007 from Quick Start que.

Programs installed recently, Dungeon Seige 2 (uninstalled and reinstalled 3 days later to go from version 2.2 back to 2.0), uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader and Flash Player and updated Creative Audigy drivers (can't get microphone to work, see thread in SoundsAudio that no one has responded to: http://www.vistax64.com/sound-audio/188631-yet-another-microphone-issue-vista.html).

I included my system info using the setup someone on this board provided.

Thanks,

Hi Pariahsolo,

There will be a record of the reset in the Event-Log, Can you give me the BCCode or event code from the event so I can see whats causing the automatic reboots?

Im guessing you have UAC disabled? UAC keeps all non-Microsoft applications and settings out of critical system places and helps Vista stay reliable and secure, You can set it to AutoEvelate if you dont like the prompts while keeping it enabled..Its suituations like this where the value of UAC becomes very clear ;)

Hey Dmex/Steven,

Never used the Event Viewer before, but I saved the file. The first time it saved it as a evtx file which is not one of the supported attachment files so I resaved it as a txt file.

Please let me know if you are needing something else.

I will go ahead and turn back on the UAC, though it was quite annoying.

Pompieus,

I tried to few times to type in sfc/scannow (and sfc /scannow) but the only thing that happened was a DOS window flashed on the screen, I checked Task Manager for both applications and process running and there was nothing showing SFC.

Dmex/Steven,

Grrr,

Turned UAC back on and rebooted. Went into Users Accounts and whenever I click on one of the options, Windows Explorers crashes and that window shuts down without starting back up.

Ted and all,

No joy. As soon as I typed in the CMD in the Start line I had to right click and Windows Explorer crashed and restarted on the right click.

Not sure where to go from here, I guess a system restore or Vista reinstall but this system came with Vista installed and all I have is a back up that I created on DVD, no disks. Ugh, more ammo to heed my buddies suggestion and 'upgrade' back to XP.

Dude, thanks a bunch.

Silly question, after running both the Start System Repair and System System Verify, what next? Is SFC something I should run periodically like scan disk?

It came back with about 130 completions. I went ahead and attached a copy of the results in case someone is curious. Is 130 a lot or does that represent 130 times Windows Explorer crashed and restarted?

Thanks again,

Dmex and all,

Unfortunately, the issue did not go away. Windows explorer is still crashing and restarting. At first it seemed to be running better, but it is still crashing when I try to use the Start/Quick Start (ie start up Word 07) and I just checked right clicking on properties of Dungeon Siege 2, like previous and it crashed. Additionally, I tried to type in www.mapquest.com in Internet Explorer and it crashed as well. Actually, it hung up for a good minute, it didn't crash-crash until I pressed the X in the upper right. The second time I tried to type in the address it worked without crashing.
