I think Bill Gates took a dump on my computer because this happened in about 3 minutes. It would have kept going but my computer got HELL laggy.

Just thought I'd share, :D

Probably caused by a badly coded shell extension.
tasklist /m /fi "imagename eq explorer.exe"
^^^ One of the non-default DLLs in that list is the likely culprit.

My Computer

Kill explorer.exe and restart it again.

Yeah I had to kill it.

I found that I can repeat it by running Windows 7 RC in VMWare 6.5 and opening a word 2007 (to get my Windows 7 RC keys ironically) document in the host OS, Vista. It only happens when the VM is running.

It is crazy because it happens so fast.

If the memory footprint drops once the VMWare process is terminated, it's technically not a leak. VMWare presumably injects something into the explorer process that requires lotsa memory while one or more VMs are running.

My Computer

No, shutting VMWare doesn't solve it.

And yet starting VMWare is what makes Explorer's size shoot up? Interesting.

It's possible to troubleshoot that sort of thing, but not trivial, and you'd have to Really Want To Know the cause :)

It's a combination of Windows 7 RC under VMWare Workstation 6.5 and opening Microsoft Word 2007 in the host OS. It only happens when the VM is running.

If I shut the VM down, but keep VMWare open, it does not happen.

I'm not desperate to find out. It will eventually get fixed by either Microsoft or VMWare.

I get memory leaks when deleting 4000 files in a directory that has 22000 files.

Explorer was using 3GB memory!!!!

I had to eventually shut down my pc as the explorer process memory usage wasnt going down

OK, but you should start your own thread though. There's nothing to link your leak to the OP's one - the cause is almost certainly different.

My Computer

ya.

But my pictures just points out that explorer is coded really bad.

Vista has memory leaks when:

Viewing files
Deleting files
copying files (as it tries to copy the same file over and over)

Most time, Explorer will start using 100% cpu usage when in 'computer' viewing drives(mostly), or at random(not as often). Closing explorer windows will make the cpu usage go back to normal.

I just think explorer has a lot of bugs.
