External hard drives

I'm running Vista x64 on my desktop and have 2 external hard drives - 1 backs up photographs, the other everything else.

Problem is that when I plug them in, they don't appear with consistent drive letters. Sometimes the photo drive is labelled J and other times K.

Is there any way I can permanently label these drives so that every time I plug them in they will be given the correct letters?

(Apologies if this is a bit of a basic question!)

Next time you connect either, go to properties and allocate a name and Drive Letter [not C, D, or E] of your choice.

Actually to get the drive letter to stick a good trick is to also give the drive a Volume name...
Handy if you swap drives in and out such as flash drives...
