What game are you trying to update. It should be an exe file.

I have always used Gameshadow here:

Never done me any harm, and it lets you know iff patches are available for alot of games, and Star Wars Empire at War is among them along with the expansion if you have it.

But maybe you have got it sorted now, but if not you could always try it out

Some patches are in a compressed format, ZIP for example.
You need to uncompress some patches for them to work.
