GTA 4 Minimum Requirements

Was looking on play.com for GTA4 and found the minimum requirements:

Windows XP with SP3 / Vista with SP1
1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2 64 or equivalent
1GB RAM (1.5GB for Vista)
16GB HDD Space
256MB nVidia 7900, ATi X1900 or equivalent
DVD-ROM Drive
Internet connection required for installation and online play

They seem pretty steep for minimum, more of a recommended. Especially the graphic cards, the 7900 is still quite a high end DX9 card.

7900 is a 4 generation old graphics card. If you're running a graphics card that low you probably already experianced GTA4 on xbox360/ps3 the way it will look with that GPU. I could be wrong but I would not be inclined to say a 7900 with be maxing out the game. Hopefully thats the minimum and reccomended is at least only 3 generations ago. I want it to look ALOT better than the console versions.

Which is why I said for DX9 games.

And considering Crysis has a minimum requirement of 6800.

A 7900 is only 1 generation behind your 8800...And if that is the minimum, I doubt your 8800 320mb will be running it max at liquid fps.

Yep, that looks to be a hogger with those requirements, hopefully, it will be super optimized, otherwise, we will have another UBI Vegas game in our hands. Anybody knows what the RECOMMENDED Reqs will be?

Just did a search and came up with this:

Processor: Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or better)
RAM: 2GB
Hard Drive: 18GB free hard disk space
Video Card: 512MB Direct3D 10 compatible video card or Direct3D 9 card compatible with Shader
Drive: DVD-ROM dual-layer drive

Not so specific with the graphic card on this one, but recommends DX10 card, which I like the sound of.

I'd be willing to bet that the 8800 series will not dissapoint with this game though. If I cant run it in 1680x1050 with all the settings maxed no AA or AF, then something is probably wrong or they changed ALOT more than how it was on the 360/ps3. I mean the game doesnt look anything close to crysis level. I cant see why it would reccomend a DX10 card, the game is only DX9 correct? And in the amount of time the game was being done up for the PC I doubt they implemented DX10. Unless of course the whole releasing it on consoles first was a total ploy and it really was originally built with PC hardware in mind. In which case I would take back everything I said and absolutely be thrilled at the fact that it could look good enough to warrent crippling my system. I have been waiting for something to bring it to its knees. An excuse to upgrade :-P

Dual core but they don't say which one... Hmmm. I am giving myself a present for Xmas and even though I have an ECS 8800GT with Accelero S1 HS, I think a GX260 would yield me better result for that eye candy look. :D

Wait!, I just looked at the "Recommended" requirements again and I now see that they list a "Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz". A Quad Core??? Hmmm, I see myself having issues with this game even after getting my GTX260.

Theres no way. Most games now a days dont even take advantage of dual cores... O.o I could be wrong but I would HIGHLY doubt a quad core is even reccomended.

Received the new issue of PC Gamer today, and it has the GTA 4 review in. It also says a Quad Core is recommended for full graphics on it.

I am highly skeptical of the relevance of that reccomendation and am willing to attest it to market strategy to get people to upgrade. I will hold further judgement until the release when actual users can give feedback and I can test the game on my own.

Well the recommendation of quad core CPUs being needed was going to come eventually, so why not now?

Because I hesitated to get fallout 3 and almost didnt at all because it reccomended a 512 video card yet ran flawlessly with my 320 8800 GTS. I am all for pushing the envelope with game tech which is why I am such a huge fan of Crysis/Crytek which ran fine with my 2 cores. Yet a console port is going to reccomend a quad core O.o This just comes back to the whole reviewers giving GTA 4 perfect 10s. Dont get me wrong I loved the game on 360, didnt play all the way through because I knew it was coming on PC and if I did I'd have little to no reason to play again. But it just seems rockstar is quite concerned with their sales/marketing with this generation of GTA. I guess I cant blame them with the economy the way it is having to make sure you get endorsed/endorse all the right people to maxamize profits. Guess we just have to wait and see what the benefit of a quad core can really achieve with this game. If it really makes a difference I'll get one. Heck its cheaper than a new video card....

Well what I like most about Rockstar is that they take their time when re-releasing GTA games on PC. They don't release them at same time as console, so they're not entire console ports and they'll optimise them for PC, like add new aiming in and improve graphics etc.

Wouldn't you believe that if they took the time coming out with the PC game that it would mean they have taking their time to optimize their port to the max and that would mean less heavier requirements?

the other way means Zero to no optimization... at least to me.

Well, only time will tell and I am going to wait a couple of weeks before I buy it. I never believe any of those online magazine and their reviews (buncha mamby-pamby tossers), I usually go to the respective forum of the game I want to play and listen to what the fanboys and whiners are saying, read between the lines and make my decision then.

Yeah sadly thats all you can do with this game because of the genre having become acceptable (not by me or by the fans choice) by lazy developers setting a standard. I mean honestly how damaging could it be to release maybe like some kind of time based demo, or a small portion of the city. Anyway you're correct the best thing to do is sit back and wait and see how it all unfolds. Especially since the game is going to be on Steam, at least I thought I read it some where you can already pre-load it or something if you order it now.

I tend to agree a game that originated on consoles making its way to PC with higher than any other game prior to date reccomending a quad core, sounds more like poor optimization than anything. Though one can not deny that Rockstar more than likely has lost any finesse they ever had with PC hardware since they made the switch to consoles as the flagship release back in 2001 with the PS2. Who knows though these days when games seem to vary so much from platform to platform and are released on them all. Perhaps they did take the what is it now 7 months since release? And actually made some drastic visual/AI improvements. But judging by track record and previous PC releases of the GTA series after its been out on consoles, the main reason they take so long is to get as many console sales as possible because even with its multiplayer I'm sure it will get pirated to hell and back on PC and even those that do buy it, will be paying 10$ less than our unfortunate console bretheren.

Well as a PS3 has 8 cores for the CPU (1 Power Processor Element and 7 Synergistic Processor Elements). The 360 also has has a tri-core (keep in mind a Phenom x3 is also a recommended CPU for GTA4) The game is most likely going to be better than both, so looking at the PS3, a quad core is probably right.

And optimisation doesn't mean lowering requirements, it means using the hardware that's available to the fullest to improve it and make it better for PC users, such as they added DX10 to it.
