Yes, you would need a DVD, but if you call your computer mfg or MS, you may be able to get one at cost, 20 bucks or so. Call the computer mfg. if it came preinstalled.

LOL, dont think that you have the (c)omputer mfg. I meant to type the manufacturer of your computer. Dell, HP, etc. If the computer came with Vista call Dell, HP, etc. the company that made your computer. If you bought the DVD and installed it yourself call Microsoft.

i think the dvd came with the laptop.. it is a Sony VAIO laptop, where do i type..? im useless!

You do not type anything, you call Sony tell them the problem and ask for a DVD. They will send for about 20 or 25 dollars.

i have users backed-up on my backup disk, how can i restore / replace them with the ones already on my laptop?

Back up DVDs are suppose to be kept current. If you use that DVD, it goes back to the way it was then.

When I say keep current, I mean once a week up date. Its too late to keep it current now. If you use that restore that you have, everything goes back to the way it was. You can backup your files etc, use the restore and then put back the items that you backed up
There is something called easy transfer, but that might bring the problem back, too.

thanks for all of your help. I haven't been on the laptop in a few days and after turning it on earlier it started startup repair for windows and then it finally restored my computer from a restore point, everything seems ok although some of data has been lost. no worries though as I backed-up all my files before hand, so i need to put them back onto the laptop and all will be good! thank you so much for your help.
