I knew I should have left it alone.........I think I've just kill my computer.

I have been looking into a new processor and decided to update my bios so that it's up to date and can handle the new tech.

Bios update went fine using the Asus updater software and I rebooted and now I have nothing - the computer will not even go to the bios flash screen...Nothing / zip

What can I do?......

Please help as I need to meet some work deadlines:cry::cry:

Can I reset it back to default via a switch on the motherboard.....oh Cr@p!!! I'm starting to freak out a bit.

Please help me!

The only jumper I can find is the RTC RAM (CLRTC) Is that the one?

Do I have to remove the onboard battery too?

Hi damocles...

GRRR should have posted before you flashed!!!!:eek:
you should of used a USB drive to flash....(Asus update software is crap!!)

tell me you never flashed over an overclock... (this is deadly ...i done it myself & bricked my P5K :o)..?

reset CMOS as john stated ....if that dont work unplug the rig from the wall & remove the battery from your board for 10mins

if none of these work ...thats it!! a BIOS flash is probably the worst update you will ever encounter :)

Yep, pull the power from the pc, then move the jumper along to the next pin for a second then move it back - if the jumper is on pins 1+2 put it on 2+3 then back

Eeeerrr it was reset before I flashed it.....I know, I feel really stupid especially given our previous discussions about not messing with hardware while I'm working on a project.

I will the above......aarrrgh

nothing.......zippo, ziltch, .... =:(

I have taken out the battery and I'll wait a bit longer but I have little hope.....I guess I have to buy a new motherboard tomorrow......... Flip side - at least I will know what not to do next time....oh! and maybe that Processor might be bagged too :D ( just don't tell anyone... )

Do you think my OEM Vista will still be valid with a new board? I have read that this is the critical factor for validation.

Any recommendations for a good Mobo in case I cannot find a p5B deluxe....maybe I'll upgrade that too...

As long as its the same mobo that comes out you should not have a problem with your OS...:)

Thanks Skunksmash,

Looks like the bios has RIP'd the board......Damn, I'm such an idiot.

Please don't judge me :D I usually know what I'm doing.....Can't seem to find the P5B deluxe so maybe they've discontinued it. But, the asus P5Q Deluxe looks nice as it supports 45nm, 1600 fsb and 16gb ram...sweeeeet.......I shall research extensively.

I will probably never Flash a bios again....ever :O.....but if I do, I know who to ask for advice first.

I really appreciate your prompt help z3r010 and skunksmash.

Cheers

I have just read your mobo manual and it has a feature to fix corrupt bios's, just what exactly does happen when you try to power the machine up?

lol....... There's a new bios out for my board ..
DON'T TOUCH IT!!!!:D:D:D

I didn't think to look on ebay - thanks

BTW...I've never replaced a motherboard before but I am looking forward to it.......I think I'll go with the P5Q as the reviews are good.

I've learnt from this, so, is there anything I should be aware of before I fry that one too?

I know I shouldn't water it with the power on....:p....anything else?.....static wrist bands I have.....maybe a heads up on the connectors - most of which seem logical ( and labeled ...i.e power, fans, usb etc.... ) but, I don't know what else to consider.

No doubt I will be back.......

Plus, any chance of a sticky about Flashing.........eeerrrr the bios.....as I had no idea flashing through vista with asus software on an O/C'd rig was a big no no - It would be good to save other forum users from the pain and expense from a bad bios update.

Wow, thanks for doing that z3r010.

The motherboard lights comes on and the fans spin....The hard drive light on the chasis comes on for one flicker then stops, the monitors are in power save mode, the keyboard is offline........I think it's had it....unless there's some kind on non keyboard shortcut to enter into bios recovery....

It needs to be able to get to the post screen to fix a bad bios :(

I would leave the battery out of it overnight and give it a try in the morning just incase.

Chris

its a good idea..... i think i will create one :D
in regard to the mobo fitting .....

use your anti static...

only touch the sides of the board where possible...

standoffs!! ...one of the most overlooked parts of fitting a mobo get one of these in the wrong spot & she will not post..
so you will have to strip it back down ...
i had this happen on another build ....for about 3 weeks i built it up & broke it down swapping out parts left right & center & still no luck.....
until a post on a forum prompted me to check :o:o a standoff was shorting it out

that was without doubt my most NUB moment...lol

the Asus boards have ''Q connectors'' so its nice & simple

remember ''cable management'' while the case is empty this is the best time to arrange the cables ...through the back plate if possible
this will lower your towers ambient temps dramatically

& that's about all for now :)

Thanks guys.

I will install with that in mind skunksmash.....actually I wasn't happy with the way my system builder piled all the power cables over my RAM so I will change that.

I'll take out the battery overnight - however I've just read a forum about this very issue and it seems the asus update utility via windows wipes the bios clean - I used the latest version and I had no errors - I have tried powering up without ram / one stick etc but it really seems like a gonna.

You know the BIOS is replaceable. It is in a socketed 8 pin DIP package. You can order another one from ASUS.

cheers

Really? I thought the bios was soldered on...I'll look into it - thanks for the tip.

Ted...I'm slightly worried my subconscious forced me into this situation..........Oh! how the human brain works.

I have a back up computer ( which I hope will be able to tide me over in the meantime ) in the studio but it's a budget dell with simliar'ish specs minus the hard drives,4gb ram and it probably uses some kind of cheapo generic M/board that runs at 200mhz - I'm not looking forward to 30 min load times for those PSD's as it only has one drive too - I'll throw in a couple of my other drives - however, that system actually had a freakout when I loaded a 40mb file...so who knows what will happen when I put in a 2.6gb one....If I can't find the bits tomorrow (...errr today) I shall have them by Tuesday via Overclockers.

I will contact Asus too as it's their crappy software that has put me and many others in this situation.......
