Hard Drive backups hang then Vista crashes

Hi folks.
Not sure which forum this topic should be in.

I have been archiving using Paragon's Drive Backup with no problems until
yesterday.

The backup stopped at approx 80% of completion and very shortly
thereafter Vista stopped working and I had to power-off to exit.

Two more attempts produced exactly the same outcome.

Ran ChkDsk which indicated no bad sectors.

Ran Western Digital Diagnostics which stopped scanning at approx 80% and
Vista ceasing to respond. The same behaviour as described above.

Tried alternative drive backup prog - same result as described above.

Unable to ascertain whether software or hardware problem.

Lots of hair on floor by desk.

Help/advice would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.

I can only reiterate that all drive diagnostics that I have tried, fail at approx 80% of scan and crash Vista at point of failure.

None have given me any idea as to the reasons for failure of scan, possibly because of Vista crashing at more or less the same time as scan failure.

Regards.

Grasmith.
